Key in switch when removing battery?

I need to pull my battery to unclog the drain beneath it (the battery well is holding water). I read my manual and it states the key should be in position '0' when disconnecting the battery. That seems odd. Why insert the key at all? I don't want to blow a SAM when reconnecting so I want to do this by the book, but I fear something may have been lost in translation. Do you guys insert the key when disconnecting the battery?
