C32/C55 AMG
I get soot as well, but I'm not tuned. I think it's a common thing on c32's, but I could be wrong.
I had a similar issue with my check engine light, but it was for my secondary cats. Apparently my O2 sensor after the cats were going bad. The way they could tell was by checking the voltage of the O2 sensors and they would not respond at all some times. Check both your cats and if it's not your cats, then more than likely it's your O2 sensors.

When I was stock I removed the charcoals and the same code got on. Put them back on and light never came back. Now I have the tune same code wtf?

I have the obd2 reader and eraser. I just erase it but it comes back after few hundred miles. Talked to my good MB mechanic he is going to hook it up to the laptop. Hopefully pinpoint the problem.

I hate to sound like a %# here man, but please do not ignore that error. It could be something simple (fingers crossed) or it could be something that causes you to lose the engine.
