c55 problem

So I recently went to my friends shop and he checked my car with his computer and it says secondary air flow? my check engine light keeps coming on..

What could this problem be? maybe my secondary cats?

Ok so if I just delete the secondary cats and the resonator will this turn off the CEL? Also I dont hear rattling when I accelerate. Could there be another possible problem?

Secondary air injection has nothing to do with the cats. We will need to know the code to help you, there are a few codes related to that system.

Ok I found the paper and all it says is MBZ Diagnostic, secondary air fault. Anyone know what that means?

my technician is going to check mine for me, i have no idea how to do it. more than likely, your secondary air is bad. it is apparently an ongoing common problem in this car. i apologize that i have no idea how to further go about diagnosing this problem. i wanna say take it to a reputable european indy shop.

If it is your secondary air injection pump, yes that will be a spendy little fix. The AMG pump differs from other production parts, I believe it is larger to accommodate the AMG exhaust.

This pump turns on for about 40 seconds when the car is started cold. It blows out some of the build up in the cats and allows for them to heat up quicker, from my understanding.

The good: Its not necessary to have this operational in order to drive the vehicle.
The bad: Its expensive to fix (about $1100 at the dealer), you can't pass emissions without it operational, and your CEL will be on, so you will not know when / if you have another problem.

There is a thread on a DIY. This is most common the the C32's. However, the thread basically concludes "its not really worth it to do this yourself."

My suggestion would be to source a refurb part and have an indy do the install (1hr labor, MAX).

Also of note, there was a TSB released in '06 to upgrade the C55's ECU in regards to this part / components. The ECU was causing the fuse to short out, and the pump to run for a longer than designed period of time, burning it out. Because of this, you should first check the fuse.

Hope this helps.

There are many factors that can trip a CEL with a DTC of secondary air injection. One of the main causes as stated above is the fuse blowing and therefore the secondary air pump won't turn on. Another can be the switch over valve, either it's defective or unplugged. Now a simple procedure you can do at home to make sure the air pump does turn on is to let the car sit overnight outside (cold), start it up in the morning and listen under the hood for the air pump to activate for under a minute. If the whining can be heard then that means it works. There are no other tests you can do at home to narrow down the cause, unless you have a scanner that can read actual valves or a SDS. I would be glad to help you out with more information, if needed please PM me

Make sure to replace your relay for the pump as well if you are doing it yourself...That was one reason mine went bad when I had to replace my secondary air pump.

Yikes. Don't know of any correlations between these two other than they are both electrical.

Luckily you don't need either to drive the car... at least during the day.

Do the lights flicker both at one or does one flicker and the other is constant? Could be wiring harness.

Perhaps its a fuse if the systems are related at all.

Did you turn the car off completely and back on? unhook the battery and rehook it back up?

Well on my list to get broken things to get working my air pump in the front was found disconnected... So now the CEL is off. one problem fixed EASILY N CHEAPLY .

Now I did just have my car at the shop to get the steering wheel adjustment fixed so the steering wheel could go up and down.. I know they disconnected a lot of stuff including the command... So my dad and I opened the panel and found some loose connections.. My radio works fine now..

But on the other hand my headlights still malfunction.. Mostly the driver side light will flicker and than on occasion they will both go out. Kind of scary since they went out tonight when I was driving around.. I even checked the battery and it seems fine.. I dont think I need a new battery..

most definitely check the fuse for the stereo. or there could be a short somewhere causing things to go bad.

Any one know why my headlights would flicker and sometimes go out? They are stock and havent been changed to what I know of. It is mostly the driver side that will flicker..

If you have zenon lights, the flicker means that you most likely have to replace your igniter, if that doesn't work, then you ballast as well. Do a search this happened to me and others on this forum.
