c32 occasionally smells like burning rubber

my 2002 c32 (108,000 miles) recently has briefly smelled like burning rubber inside. I checked around the wheels to make sure the brakes were not stuck on, and the smell is not coming from there. It seems to be coming through the vents. Upon opening the hood, the smell was there but only a little bit, and not as strong as it had been inside the car. The smell is not continuous and will go away after a few minutes. Additionally, the last couple times i have gotten to anout 9,000 miles before my 10,000 mile service A or B, it has told me to add 1 quart of engine oil. Could these be related? I figured, the requirement for a quart of oil not too long before my next scheduled oil change was not that terribly uncommon for a high performance car with over 100k miles on it. Now with this smell, I am starting to think maybe there is something wrong I need to have looked at?

maybe check the sound damping by the rear axel. The sound dampening might have come loose and is burning from the heat of the exhaust. I would jack up the car and remove the underbody shield and just inspect the car. Or it could just be a plastic bag you ran over and is burning on the exhaust.

That happens pretty often, too - in fact, I had it happen with my C230. Against all odds, a plastic bag managed to be swept up underneath the car, wrap itself around the header, and start to melt/burn. Not pleasant.

The only thing I'd mention, is that IMHO burning plastic smells different from burning rubber, although close I guess. Burning oil smells a little similar to both... maybe he's experiencing the leaky-valve-cover-dripping-onto-header issue that occassionally crops up?

Valve cover leak. The oil burns off after a few minutes.

Yeh. Check this NOW. I had a similar issue and it turned out to be oil, not rubber that was burning. The timing chain tensioner tends to back out on these cars after a while. Mine was leaking oil and the tech said if i hadn't brought it in when i did the rest of the oil would have gone and the engine would have seized.

it's the valve cover GASKET - just had the same issue addressed last week. it's the rubber that keeps the valve cover sitting flush.

Usually it leaks from the little valve cover on top of the real valve cover, if you know what I mean. It doesn't use a gasket. High temp black gasket in a tube is all you need. I had mine done by the dealer under warranty but when It started leaking again I resealed it myself.

Here's a link to a how to fix it.

My power steering pump leaks fluid and it makes that smell when it burns off. Maybe check that too.
