is this true?
a friend of mine ordered a subaru sti ( i dont know much about this car) but he claims it can beat the c32 in 0-60 and quarter mile times. stock to stock. is this true? he wants to race and i'm not sure if its a good idea. it would be embarassing to get beaten by this car.

The "numbers" on the WRX STi are very impressive: 300hp and 300 ft.-lbs. plus all wheel drive.
Look here.....
http://www.edmunds.com/news/autoshow...2/page030.html
Autoweek also tested this car and the Lancer Evo in a recent issue. These cars are very fast. If I recall, the Lancer had a 60-0 braking distance of just over 100 feet!
Bottom line, if you friend knows how to work a manual shifter well, you'll have your work cut out for you.
In any case, I still would not want one.

It's very true. Both the LanEvo VIII and the upcoming STi will outpace our C32. However, there is nothing to feel sad about, as both those cars are boy racers; and ours are somewhat "luxury" sports sedans. If you have the spare change, why not get one of those rallie monsters just for the thrill. Sti is awesome in the sense that it carried almost all the parts directly from the rallie edition. And, getting the juice out of the engine is not as frustrating/costly as ours.

2003 c32
Because of the build quality and luxury of the car the c32 should not even be compared to the far cheaper built STI. And remember this, even though the race to 60mph and 1/4 might be damn close, on the highway the c32 would eat up the STI.

i want 1!!! as my daily driver!!! that car hauls ***!! they are only 35000. a great deal to kill alot of supercars out there. that car also has alot of tuning potential. going up to 500 HP shouldn't be a problem at all.

I would not be surprised that a STi can beat a C32 because it has AWD and its much lighter. However, 300 hp from a Subaru (or any Japanese auto maker) is like 250hp for a German car. I am pretty sure a C32 can pull away from the STi after 100.

the entry price for a 300+ hp small car is getting cheaper and cheaper each year. maybe in 2 years 300 hp cars for $20,000 will be common. now i know, next time i see a subaru sti or evo 8 in my rear view mirror, i should give it the same respect as i would an m3. the c32s short reign as king of small 300+hp sedans was nice while it lasted. i know its a subaru not a mercedes but still, my hat off to subaru and mitsubishi.

botton line is the c32 will eat up both the evo and the sti after 100mph, and if u get rid of your limiter the top speed isnt even close, the benz, m3, and s4 (new one) still have to much power for those cars on the highway.

'02 C32 AMG
My buddy just picked up the new Evo 8 a few weeks ago. He already did some minor mods to replace his intake and up his boost. I raced him a couple times already with my stock C32, on a roll and I pull about 3-4 cars each time after 100mph. From a dead stop he definately gets a jump on me and I don't start to reel him in until end of 3rd into 4th gear.
Based on this real world experience I think the numbers they got for the Evo in that WRX vs Evo comparo definately seem "above average".
I think once he finishes his exhaust mods I wouldn't be surprised if the outcome was different. Time for the odps

derek, one lap of america just finished one leg of the race at carolina motorsports, and an olider wrx with a chip and exhaust absolutely smoked a stage 2 autoauthority-modified twin turbo; and this is not a short track, but 2.25 miles with several straights. clearly the driver is a serious factor, but those cars are fast. incidentally, the fastest lap i observed was turned by a new- and stock- evo. there may have been faster cars, but of the 30 or so that i saw, none surpassed the evo.

G55
I recently purchased an Evo 8 as a fun daily driver. I think that you would all be shocked at how quick and fun that this car is to drive fast. I've owned just about every AMG Mercedes made, E55, CLK55, S55 (not the kompressor engines), and I currently drive a Kleemann G55. The evo will hang with all of them until you hit the "twisties" at which point the Evo will destroy them. It is by no means a Mercedes and does not pretend to be. However, if anyone is in the market for a $30,000 car that can be easily modded, I highly recommend the Evo. I do not think that the performance figures in the mags are a stretch, the Evo really does feel as fast as these mags say. It's no Mercedes, but it's a blast to drive.

Your theory is erroneous.
A Yugo could never be fun to drive.
Besides, The C32 is not only AMAZINGLY fun, it is also classy and prestigious.
The same cannot be said for Subaru. End of story.

it's too hard to compare a luxury sports car vs a economy sports car....heck the evo 8 doesn't even have speed sensitive steering. i mean...the dodge srt4 will kick most of cars in mb's lineup that doesn't say amg...but what would u take? i'll take the mb over that anyday...

Are we talking performance or prestige?
I believe the original post questioned the performance capabilities of the STI (or EVO, modded WRX) compared to C32. Regardless of what you say about the prestige of owning a Subaru or Mitusbishi, when it comes to pure performance on the track or 1/4 mile, braking, skid pad, etc. these are cars to be reckoned with. When it comes to how cars actually perform on the street the AWD systems make up for a lot of stupid driver errors, so I expect these cars to be able to deliver on the street in all kinds of conditions. I agree that as the race would go to high speeds and straighten out that our AMG's would take over. Like it or not, AMG is more designed for high speed highway eating than it is for the road course and it's geared more for the highway than the 1/4 mile.
These two cars couldn't be farther apart in general character. Manual transmissions, lighter weight, little electronic intervention, AWD, less luxury and sound deadening, less quality, totally different images, etc. To me they're perfect compliments to each other. I don't see how any true driving enthusiast couldn't respect or enjoy the japanese performance rally cars. They're very capable from a performance standpoint and loads of fun to drive.
I bought a WRX to have a cheap, fun, manual transmission, performance car with AWD capabilities that would allow me to drive the car anywhere, anytime for work AND would be a perfect compliment to my C32. Frankly, I don't worry too much about prestige (or trying to impress people) when I buy a car but I think it's more prestigious to be able to own both cars! My biggest personal problem with this genre of car is the boy racer image with the huge wings, etc. On the other hand, nothing says class like driving an AMG Benz, Porsche, M BMW, or S Audi!!
The WRX has loads of relatively cheap hop up mods and mine will be finished with the power mods (UTEC chip, exhaust, new intercooler courtesy TurboXS tuning) in about a month to the tune of about 340 crank HP. Pretty good for a 3100 lb. car! Roozy - I believe hot WRX's, EVO's, STI's, etc. are doing about 1.7 second 60 ft. times and most of their advantages are going to be in the first 1/8th mile.
We should all kiss the ground for living in, and being able to play in, the best performance automotive scene ever. Viva la difference!
P.S. I have a suspicion that those AMG drivers that don't like/respect these cars, would never own one, etc. are more likely the AMG drivers that will never have their car on the road course track or participate in an autocross.

I believe the original topic was related to street driving and had absolutely nothing to do with road course driving or autocross. I have a suspicion that people who defend cars like the aforementioned Subarus have no intention of getting on the autobahn anytime soon. (Sarcasm phaser, set to "stun")
Presitge plays a small, yet integral role within C32 ownership. Quality, Styling, & Performance in no particular order are among the top features that attract most people, I would imagine.
The "boy racer image" does indeed run rampant amongst not only Subaru, but most of the Jap manufacturers. Few things are as obnoxious as encountering the ubiquitous Accord adorned with a coupld hundred dollars of shoddy aftermarket accessories. An oversized exhaust & wing does not a street racer make.
Ever witnessed a quarter mile run between two boy racers? Seasons have changed before they cross the finish line.
