C32 Blown motor - SLK32 direct swap?
Just like the title says. Car has 135k on the clock. I installed the 185mm pulley, H/E, Intake, secondary cat/res delete and car started acting up (stumble at idle, miss-fire when boosting over 14.5 psi). Replaced throttle body, crank position sensor, throttle pedal position sensor, catalytic converters, and just purchased the map sensor but didn't have a chance to install (This car has been a pain in my ***). Took it to the shop to get checked out last week, they cleared the codes and said it was fine. Drove her to Vegas (from san diego) and it began miss-firing. A few days after my return from Vegas, one of the valves busted as well as a rocker arm. Also managed to bust the spark plug tips. They think there may be damage to the cylinder as well.
Soo...
At this point, I am looking into either swapping a motor or just cutting bait and walking away. Online and at a few yards I have found slk32 motors, but no reasonable C32 motors. **Does anyone know if it is a direct swap?** (Or the x-fire motor for that matter). Eurocharged did the tune and I tried to talk to Jerry but he's on vacation until Monday. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Do you know if it will be a straight swap? I have heard the oil pans are different. I was wondering if that will be a problem, and if there is anything else (like that) to worry about. Has anyone on here tried a straight swap?

Yep, you are right. It is 112.960 vs. 112.961. I jumped the gun. But they are more the same than any other 112 engines. And yes, the upper oil pan is different. But the lower oil pan is the same. Make sure its 2003 or later becasue of the cams issue in the 2002s.

I hope you never do. But more than a few people, including me, had the issues with cams. Here is a PDF file listing the cam part numbers where it clearly states that the "old part should no longer be installed" as opposed to the "replaced by".
The cams lobes are known to shift out of spec and cause misfires and damage valves. In my case it was the exhaust valve on cyl #6. FrankW had a similar porblem.

Just done my second engine swap 2 months ago and I dropped in an SLK32 motor. As has been mentioned the oil pan is different but that is very easy to change. No problems fitting mine. I don't know if my new engine had some work done but it goes like hell and I am very, very happy with my SLK motor swap. My previous swap was for a 2002 C32 motor and that also blew up - I was running similiar mods to yours. The only hassle I have had is my oil warning lamp keeps coming on, but the oil level is perfect so I am replacing the sensor - I hope that changing the pan has not restricted the volume of oil going through the pickup. Will keep you posted once I ahve changed sensors.

Thanks for the help guys. That actually sounds identical to my problem (The cam lobe shifting). Also, thanks for the heads up on the year of the motor. I will have to refine my search. The shop my car is at right now told me a C32 motor from mercedes is $17,000, and that's not installed.
Time to put in some leg work...

I had almost the exact same problem with my c32. I attempted the swap myself and used a slk motor. Like mentioned before the oil pans are different and the oil pump is different as well, but assuming you did not blow a whole through the pan, (which I did) you can reuse the pan/pump from your engine. The exhaust manifolds are slightly different as well. Good luck with the swap, I just had to have second engine pulled, and rebuilt again. This time I had all 4 exhaust valves break, so I just took it to a shop. They only charged me $2500 plus a few extra parts. $17000 is way too much.

Take it from the king of C32 engine destroyers - buy a used motor from a wreck and make damn sure it is a 2003 or better a 2004 motor by checking the engine serial numbers. I picked up a 2004 SLK32 motor with 50 000 miles on it for $ 5000.00 and it runs like a dream. My previous motor was a 2002 C32 which I sourced for $ 3500.00 - it only lasted 2000 miles before dying the same death as my original motor.
Do the math, a rebuild is more expensive and problematic, especially if you have damage to the sleeves/bore. Swapping engines is quick and can be done in 2 days. AMG charged me a ridiculous $ 850.00 for labour on my 2nd engine swap and then I had to pay for oil, gaskets, etc which wasn't much. The best part about a used engine is that it is already run in so you can slap on your mods and away you go.

Thanks for the link! I saw this one while searching yesterday. Unfortunately, its from an 02' slk and I'm a little weary about installing any 02' 3.2 motor at this point. I did however find a shop that says they can get there hands on at least 3 slk engines. So i'm waiting to hear back from them on pricing.

Source the engine yourself and save the markup. Just go to car-part.com and do a search. It takes 45 seconds.
Here's just one of the '04 engines listed:

As a matter of fact, I just got off the phone with victor (The guy who's selling the engine you gave as example) and he's going to get me a shipping quote by Monday. I really appreciate the help on this. Thanks again everyone! Hopefully I can get her up and running before the end of the month. I ran in the targa trophy Event #1 (in San Diego, CA) last month, but it looks like I'm going to miss Event #2 due to this engine failure..

For example, for $500 more you get almost 40K less miles:
2004
Engine
Mercedes SLK\3.2,
CAL,RWD, 49,000 AF83768 $3750 LKQ Foster Auto Parts USA-OR(Portland) Request_Quote 1-888-578-5548
I agree. They should have just said "6-month, unlimited mileage."

As mentioned try and keep your original motor when you purchase a used one. I managed to keep mine on both trades and people are willing to buy your old throttle body for $ 350.00 and the supercharger usually fetches $ 750.00. I have both my undamaged cylinder heads up for sale at $ 1500.00. The engine block, if badly damaged is sold as scrap and the broken pistons make nice ashtrays. This all helps lessen the blow. Best of luck and take extra, extra care not to buy a 2002 motor or you will be in for the same surprise I got (twice).
