Is this rim salvageable?
Hello. I have replaced my C55 rims due to one of the wheels being severely cracked. I took it to a local MB shop, who then contacted different welders. All of them said they could not fix the wheel.
I have included several pictures of the wheel. Do you guys know of any specific shops that buy damaged aluminium wheels? I am considering putting the damaged wheel on ebay but I'm not sure if this is wise. These wheels cost $400-500 used, so I feel pretty bummed to have to give it to a junkyard for possibly $20. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

that's a loss my friend....no welder with a conscience would "repair" that rim and give his word that it will last, that too serious of a crack to repair, take the loss, move on, **** like that happens to everyone

The fact that the crack is all the way into the "barrel" is what's probably going to be the deciding factor. Call a wheel repair shop. I've seen wheels that everyone claimed were done for, end up repaired, balanced, and back at the track

Wrong. I know a guy that had fixed worse. It requires very expensive welding stick and it has to be done in TIG by someone who really knows what they are doing. The crack has to be accessable from the center, so you will have to grind it up a little but not too much because that will cause the area to become brittle, and then... viola. He said he has fixed worse, but the wheel repair (welder, paint, filling, ect.) would be a little over on the cost of a new one. So unless the wheel is rare, sentimental, or something really special, not worth the money.

never weld a rim that has a crack to the barrel. Your asking for high speed issues with that.
As a reference, when we were at the mile, a vette blew a tire and flipped several times.
Its not worth it man....

Thanks! Since the drivability risk is very high, I was planning to put this on ebay with the links to the cracked rim and outer rim photos to see if anyone, possibly an aluminium shop, is interested in purchasing. Do you think this is ethical? If not, I may just give it to my local junkyard or aluminum shop for possibly $20

I had my rims repaired 3 times with such cracks, and no issues with the welds. The shop you took it to probably can't fix the weld because they either don't know how to, or don't have the proper equipment or experience. It's definitely not a simple weld. However, I can tell you IT CAN be fixed because I've had mine fixed 3 times (3 different cracks on both rear wheels).
