BOOM!

So IM going to visit my mom in the hospital in pennsylvania. I accelerate onto Rt 209 and just as I get to 60 MPH, BOOM!
No more power. No messages on the display. Now I'm sitting on the side of the road waiting for the tow truck
Gonna need a transmission I think.

Nope. Engine is fine. Either the trans or the diff. Of the two, probably the trans. Also there are grumbly noises from under the car. Maybe one of the planetary gears let loose? Bummer.

I can also be an axle. If it is, let me know. I have a spare set.

new trans....but

So, I got in the remanufactured trans from silverstar transmission with 6 clutch packs per clutch instead of the usual (for C32) 5 so the trans torque capacity is maxed out for the 722.641 gearset size. I followed all instructions in installing it - fill up the new converter, immediately check fluid level, top up to proper level, zero out transmission adaptations with STAR diagnostic, drive around very sedately until the TCU adaptations are re-done. That's all done, and the transmission shifts fine except for this one thing:
1) when holding the shifter left, the trans will only downshift one gear, not the multiple downshifts to find the "optimal gear for acceleration". It used to work as advertised with one downshift with a tap left, and multiple downshifts when held left for 1 second or so.

Do you think the silverstar guys gave me the incorrect valve body in the remanufactured transmission?

I didn't know we could downshift in the c32. I think it may just need to adapt. Did you do the work on your own? Should have done the rear main seal while the trans was out, they always have a tendency to leak.

Stock AMG speedshift in the C32 allows a leftward nudge to set a "highest available gear" setting (will still upshift at redline, however). Multiple nudges left or right will move that numerical value up and down. The trans will still downshift when necessary, but won't upshift past the gear selected unless you redline it.

A leftward hold will compute a "lowest available gear based on speed" calculation and drop down to that gear for max accelleration potential (and will still upshift at redline).

I have 500 miles on the transmission now. The TCU is fully trained and the transmission now works perfectly! A 1/2 second hold to the left drops it down multiple gears so it gives max acceleration while still having 1500 or so RPM before it needs to upshift. The beast was subdued for awhile, but it is back out of the cage and at full strength!

I am really impressed with the guys at silver star transmission. Bob, the lead builder spent 1/2 hour on the phone with me discussing the 3 different sizes of planetary gears and clutches in the various 722.xxx transmissions and how he could build the 722.641 up for me to take maximum torque (700 ft-lbs or so) and didn't charge me any extra for the additional clutch packs. Beleive it or not, they built it and shipped it out the same day and the FedEx man delivered it to my house 3 days later. I just sent the core back in the shipping container. The refundable core charge was only $300.

Now, if I can find another CD changer, and get the phone to work all the time, the car will be perfection!

I have a cd changer for sale if you're interested.
