Do I have a problem, I mean my car

Twice I have gone to start my car and something odd happened and I wonder if there is something wrong. I always turn the key to the on position, listen for the fuel pump to prime and then turn it the rest of the way to start, I do this on all cars. But twice after the pump primed I turned the key the rest of the way and nothing. I mean absolutely nothing, the idiot lights are on, etc. but silence, not a click or a tick, nothing. I turn the key back and back to the start position and it roars to life. It has a brand new factory battery that lives on a tender so it's perfect. The only odd thing is, both times I was reaching in to start the car and not sitting in the seat, don't know if there is some circuit looking for a body in the seat, but I'm guessing not. I will be using my other key and see if it ever happens again with it, that would rule out an issue with the key any way.

If it starts normally, I wouldn't worry about it. If it bothers you alot, i would goto the dealership or a merc shop in IL for a diagnostic test

Mine did it once, but hasn't done it again in many thousand miles. Something about a CPS failure, but I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens a lot.

Did it register a CPS failure code when it did it? It doesn't crank no fire, when it happened the starter never engaged or turned the motor at all. I could see a CPS if I had a crank no fire, but this is just like a non functioning ignition switch.

Try the second key and see if it happens. Ive seen a few bad keys do that.

Thanks, that was my thought too. I'll just use my other key and see if it ever comes back. If it doesn't, it is the key and I can always replace it.

I re-read your post and I think it's your CPS going south
Soon, your car may stall while you are driving.. Do search and get it fixed.
Good luck

I guess I figured that if it was the CPS, the motor would turn over fine, just never fire because without the reference to where the crank is the computer would never trigger an injector or fire a coil. I've seen CPS failures on other brands, but the starter always engaged and turned the motor over, it just would run. A CPS is cheap, I guess I can throw one in, couldn't hurt to have a fresh one.

The CPS will not cause a no crank situation.

Mine has done the same, several times. In fact, I've had the engine shut down on me when going up a hill, was probably one of the scariest experiences.

Also- when its cold out, it seems like the car will really hesitate from a 1-2 shift, or a 2-3 shift.... the rev's will dip and sound like the car is going to stall, then back up and shift? Not sure if this is the CPS as well.

I'm going to have mine replaced after reading this thread....

I have had zero driveability issues, the car has never missed a beat, runs strong and has performed flawlessly. It's just the no crank twice thing. It's like I'm not turning the key far enough to engage the starter.

Yeah, I should have been more clear, I have 3 separate issues:

1.) Sometimes (rarely) when I turn the key all of the way, nothing happens - no sounds, no nothing. Its almost like a dead battery, but I do have electrical power.

2.) Twice now, I've been driving up a hill and the car has immediatly lost all power. Rev's went to 0 and then in a matter of seconds, the car fired back up again and everything returned to normal. Once going up a hill, and once in reverse.

3.) When driving with the engine below optimum operating temp, the car will hesitate to shift on the 1-2 or 2-3. Now I let the car warm up fully prior to driving.

I've had this happen too... and (1) I always wait for it to warm up, and (2) do a quick throttle reset, and that seems to cure it every time.

#3 from post 13 is perfectly normal. When cold, the shifts are delayed to heat the cats sooner via higher revs and put the car into closed loop for reduced emissions.
