AMG C32 Supercharger shaft has play

Hi all

I have been a member here for the last couple of years and have learnt alot from the threads and posts I have read on the forum.
I have, with the help of the forum, replaced my tensioner assembly, sc guide pulley as well as the smooth guide pulley below the sc.
I also replaced the bearing in the supercharger pulley some 20k miles ago.
The problem i have recently noticed is that i still have alot of noise from the front of the engine/supercharger.
I also seem to have developed some play and movement in the shaft of the supercharger which the pulley is attached to. Either this or there is play/movement in the electro magnetic clutch part of the supercharger not the pulley.
I have made 2 short videos. One with the engine running the other with the engine off.
Car has 145K miles, no mods, regularly serviced and maintained

Your help is greatly appreciated.

I'll check mine to see if it's doing the same thing. I just changed my bearing out less than a few thousand miles ago and it's already squealing again, I wonder if it's doing the same thing as yours.

I received a bad bearing. Swapped a bearing that made no noise (but we noticed play once it was pulled). The new bearing started to make noise as the miles were put on. Swapped in another pulley and all is good.

Stock supercharger pulley, but I'm talking about the large black portion behind the pulley.

I have seen another thread regarding a washer which is to be inserted in the pulley before the bearing and C clip at the front, i think the machine shop who pressed my bearing out may have lost this washer leaving the bearing with a fraction of play inside the pulley due to this missing washer. Could this be a cause of this noise and play

I can't see that being the issue, the pulley should be slightly loose then. The black portion behind the pulley has a bit of play forward and back on my car, but it doesn't make the same sound as yours when you move it left to right.

I checked the clearance between the pully and the magnetic clutch and it was .84mm. Also when facing the pulley the clearance was more on the left hand side of the pulley and less on the right hand side. I decided to remove the pulley to give it an inspection and also see if the noise and play was only in the shaft part of the supercharger.
The pulley seemed to spin smoothly (bearing is only 20k old), however the rivets did look like they were worn (mileage is 145 k miles) but did not have any play.
The pulley had no apparent rattles or looseness as loudnheard said however the black part and shaft of the supercharger looked to have a couple of milimetres of play/movement back and forward when gripped from the front.
I reattached pulleys and belt and brought the clearance back to .30 mm, however there is .38mm clearance on the left hand side of the pulley and .30 mm on the right hand side.
Would this indicate that
A) The backing plate of the pulley or pulley is not dead straight (time for a eurocharged sc pulley/tune).
B) The front flange of the supercharger has deteriorated due to mileage and wear and tear and i need a new/used supercharger.
Video is below.
Sorry about the long post...

just to add, the car performs as it should and after sorting the clearance of the pulley it was driving lovely with the sc engaging as it should, it is just the pesky noise at idle which i cant take and is driving me crazy!!!

I don't know why I couldn't think of the name of the black part, it's the electro magnetic clutch. In reality we do not even need it, it was put in to increase mileage. Apparently it was suppose to keep the supercharger from staying engaged the whole time. I wonder if it can be tightened from the inside. Maybe the electro magnetic clutch can be replaced.

No. I am saying that you may need a new bearing. Just because it is new does not mean it is good these days.

Hi All
Once I have the sc pulley removed, how do i remove the magnetic clutch part (dark metal ring behind pulley).
Is it pressed onto the shaft or will i need to remove the supercharger to dismantle the front end. I am considering a new/used supercharger as a replacement or do you think I would be better off getting my current sc rebuilt.
All help is much Appreciated.

Hello,

I know this is an old thread but I have the w211 E55 and I'm getting the exact same play in my supercharger clutch... Did you ever fix yours? Or did you have to replace the supercharger?

Any help you can give me is much appreciated!

Thanks!!!
