SC pulley change

Sorry to post this topic again, but I am stumped. I read the threads on the pulley change and they all start at the point of removing pulley. How do I loosen belt exactly? Ive unbolted the pulley to the left of the SC and that was obviously a mistake...there is also a metal tube in front of the SC pulley. I thought unbolting it from the pulley to left of SC would do the trick, but it remains solidly in place. Frustrated already and i haven't even gotten to the part where I cannot grip the pulley to loosen the bolt!!!!!

Nice instructions. Now it makes more sense. I have removed the belt and the adjacent pulley (I drained the SC oil and put in new Jet Oil II $15 at local airport...) and tried the crowbar to apply "light" pressure, but the clutch is still turning despite quite a lot of pressure. Do they make strap wrenches this big?

Yes, use a strap wrench. I bought a craftsman set from Sears for around $15. This will make your life much easier.

It's also easier if you have a second person holding the strap wrench.

Also used a oil filter strap wrench worked great. Please just make sure your turning to the left to loosen, LOL... If not you're going to snap the hallowed bolt. Also once the pulley is replaced and you're tightening the bolt I highly suggest you use a torque wrench as it doesn't take much to break the bolt. Torque spec is small on it something like 14ft/lbs.

SC Pulley change

Thanks for the advice. Strap wrench definitely way to go. Got the pulley off and took it to the local machine shop and they got the new bearing in. Put the pulley back on. The gap is bigger between it and the clutch than before. It now measures .06". I believe I read in a post somewhere that the upper limit is .04 or something around that. Now I can't get the damn thing off again...Does anyone have any idea if .06" is too much of a gap? I doubt the machine shop guy is going to be able to push the bearing in another .03" exactly!

Hello...The gap is supposed to be .25-.30mm (not inches...) Therefore I am way too wide on the gap. Took it back to the machine shop and he said it is pressed in as far as it will go. Wow. Now I am wondering what to do. I have taken out all three thin shims that were in there for spacing.

I don't think it has anything to do with the bearing. The bearing is retained by a clip in the front and in the rear is a small ring that holds it in the back. If the bearing is protruding then the front retaining clip will not go on. The pulley should slide on and move all the way to the back and then you should be able to adjust the space between the pulley and the magnetic clutch.

Sc pulley

Well, i got desperate and took my hammer and gave the bearing a few taps using a soft de-burring stone for skis. Now it fits perfectly with .25mm gap. Lucky...I guess the guy at the shop stopped a little shy of the bearing being fully seated. The car sounds brand new. I didnt appreciate how much noise that bearing was making. Thanks to everyone above.
