Lightbulb Thermo-Isolated AirBox & SL55 Y-pipe installation

Well, a lot of people have asked me how I have installed my SL55 Y-pipe, and here is my procedure and pics:

After removing the complete air box and the stock Y-pipe with the 2 respective rubber pipes I cut a part of the OEM 2 rubber pipes (see pic) that connects the air-box, I would say 1 inch.

http://groups.msn.com/Mercedes2003C3...oto&PhotoID=34

With this extra rubber in the exit of the OEM air box (see pic) is more that sufficient to fulfill the difference between the C32 and SL55 rubber pipes diameters.

http://groups.msn.com/Mercedes2003C3...oto&PhotoID=35

Moreover, when I remove the OEM air box, I figured out how hot was, thus I decided to Thermo-isolated with a 3M alumina isolator tape “orange box” ($9 at hardware store, I may post pics tomorrow; nevertheless, there are more products on the market that may work better, like Thermo-tec heat shield material ; please se at https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...threadid=39709 as an example), and now there is a big difference in temperature with just touching between the air box cover and the font plastic pulleys cover.

http://groups.msn.com/Mercedes2003C3...oto&PhotoID=37

Originally all the covers Air box (2 rectangular + plastic pipes) and font pulleys cover were at so far the same temperature really hot.
More cold air box, more oxygen, more flow, keep colder, so on..

Finally with 4 new brackets I installed everything:

http://groups.msn.com/Mercedes2003C3...oto&PhotoID=36

http://groups.msn.com/Mercedes2003C3...oto&PhotoID=40

Outcome.
After driving for 150 miles, and really high ambient temperature (95-100 F) the installation is just perfect.
The SL55 Y-pipe + thermo-isolated the air-box makes difference.
On one hand, the SL55 Y-pipe makes a HUGE improvement in acceleration response, and a progressive power line (with my set-up), perhaps some HP & TQ there for sure.
The thermo-isolation gives to my C32 now a prolonged “driving early morning” sensation.... and so on.
I have to dyno guys, and I hope it helps,

Thumbs up

Cool in mods & intakes ! Pierre32.
Where did you get the 2nd signature plate ?

One aggressive C32 member here brought an idea.
He maximized the crank pulley to 192 mm & successfully overtook
a 996TT, deeply impressed that Porsche.
In theory, it boosts 420+ ps.
Here comes the issue :
We're running stage-II 10% richer feul(good for ODPS), how more boost be compensated by the MAP of C32AMG ?
Chip tunning seems the only way to solve it.

What kind of material did you use to insulate the airbox? I'm interested in trying something similar...

ro0zy,
I would say 1 Thermo-Tec Heat Barrier Adhesive Backed 12"x24" (Part #13575) $18.00 + s/h at:
http://www.speedzone24-7.com/SpeedZo...nt-Catalog.htm

is more than sufficient and better that the 3M that I used.

Thanks!...looks good but ...
the Thermo-Tec Heat Barrier Adhesive Backed is capable of withstanding radiant temperatures in excess of 2000°F, and the Heatshield Products just withstands 1000° F.

According to 3M and other vendors.. aluminum has a melting point of 1200 degrees.. its hard to see how a block w/ aluminum has a 2000 degree temp rating.. see below

Yes!
nonetheless, in our case, I have been using my car these days on 100F ambient temperature and the 3M aluminium still there, no melt.
I ordered this Monday the 1 Thermo-Tec Heat Barrier Adhesive Backed 12"x24" and I will put it over the 3M one

Ciao!
Grazie

Was 1 package of the 12"x24" heat shield enough or would you get two?

Thanks

Just applied the thermo-tec.. car seems to keep that "cold car" performance for quite a bit longer than it used to.

Also, the top of the air boxes are significantly cooler than the top of the pulley cover. It's actually quite shocking how much cooler.

Very nice..
