Changing oil, not fun
I have read all the oil change threads, I bought a 9L extractor pump, got 2x mann 718/5 filters from ebay, bought 10L of mobil 1 0w40 and the tool for getting the filter housing apart (76mm 14 sided for anyone looking to get one).
Ran the car for a minute to stir all the crap up. I then took the filter housing off which involved a lot of force with my 3/8 wrench, I am not sure how some of you do it with your hands. Using the extractor to get the oil out is a very clean procedure but f*ck the filter assembly drips oil all over the place, I recommend a rather large rag/towel to put around/under it to get it out of the engine bay. I have never owned a car which doesn't cause a huge mess when changing the oil filter.
I am stuck on a couple of things. The oil filter assembly... from what I can tell the long plastic thing which sticks into the engine does not come out of the plastic cap for the filter right? There are 3 O-rings I can see but the oil filter came with 4. Is there a hidden one or does it just come with an extra O-ring?
Also how long does it take you guys to suction all the oil out? Mine is literally dripping into the container. With a lot of vacuum it will become a small trickle at most. It took about 20-30 mins to get about 2 quarts. Is this right?
I'll post some pictures when I am done for anyone else. I have done dozens of oil changes on japanese cars but this is a whole new boatload of fun.

No, the suction amount is not correct. I don't use the suction method but many on here do. I prefer the bolt method...
Unscrew the filter and leave it loose in engine. This will cause it to depressurize and most of the oil that's in it will dump into the pan. Then you can take off the filter with minimal spillage.
There are only 3 rings on the stem and the large one on the cap. There is an extra.

I use the suction method and it works for me. I use to do the bolt method, but it's so much work. Were you suctioning the oil from the dipstick tube? I use a plastic bag and a paper towel to remove the filter from filter assembly cleanly. I remove my filter assembly with a strap wrench, maybe yours was tightened too much. Everything takes me about 30 minutes total.

I use drain plug method as well, takes me about 5 minutes to get car up and panels off... personally wouldn't bother going out to buy an extractor (if you do get a good one, which is even more $$)...as if you save any time against plug method it's minutes at best. I would not want anyone reading this thread to believe this is any harder than a regular oil change (and when I did plug method I was still getting same amount of oil as those using extraction):
- jack up car, put on stands
- pull panels off underneath car (about 6 bolts or so)
- pull out filter (top side of engine)
- screw out drain plug under car
- get new filter squared away and installed (don't remember exactly now, I just pull the old one, replace orings/seals and put it back in
- if oil is done draining, put plug back on then panels and take car of stands(or ramps, hate those myself)
- reset oil interval inside car (see video on youtube for that)
oh, I personally wouldn't have run the car before draining oil, when you do that the oil is circulated so you really then need to let the car sit for a bit to let it all settle in the oil pan again before draining.
I think you sound right on the oil filter, I believe I remember not having to use all four orings (as this filter isn't just specific to our own model it's likely needed for a different application)
Last the mobile 1 you bought is the European spec, correct?

Thanks for the advice. I will resume the oil change after work tonight so it will have been sitting for a while by then. 2 quarts is all I got before I decided to call it quits for the night, I realize I should have about 8-8.5 afterwards. The mobil 1 is 0w40, fully synthetic and meets the 229.3 and 229.5 standards, that is all I can remember. It is a surprisingly hard oil to find, there was only one shop that sold it $316 for 10L (exactly the same as what MB sells it for here) but I managed to find some online for $210 for 10L = approx US$150.

2nd that, with my mitivac all 8.5 liters are removed in under 6 minutes. Everyoine else is right about the filter and o rings -- I always have an extra o ring after replacing them all.

So all I managed to get is 5.60 quarts. It started bubbling air and the oil flow dropped off so it has picked up all the oil it can. I have the tube pushed down as far as it will go but I realize this is less oil than I should have.
This is the oil I got and the 76mm 14 side filter cap socket.
I bought two of these filters on ebay incl shipping for less than one at MB here.
On a brighter note, this came today.
They look great from a distance, I guess just don't look too closely. The flanges are really thick and the design is very good. The construction is in general very good, all mounting surfaces are smooth and the airflow looks like it would be great. An extrude hone wouldn't be enough to smooth the inside and the welds... but I'm sure they will flow a lot more than the stock manifolds so thank you eurocharged, I might do a dyno when they are in.

If this is imperial, it would covert to about 6.73 US quarts. When you refill add the same amount you took out and use the dyno mode to check the level. Easier to add than take out and waste that expensive oil.

Also, to aid in suctioning (as Viper mentions), unscrew the filter assembly, and the oil fill cap, and leave them open while you're sucking out the old oil. My Mityvac pump isn't terribly fast, and I suspect it doesn't seal 100%, but I still am able to change the oil in an hour or two, without having to get on my back or messing with ramps, jackstands, etc. Pretty easy and clean swaperoo.

It will be much easier the next time I do it. Even if it takes ages I still find it nicer and cleaner than getting under the car. I think I can do it without spilling any oil at all.
I read the volume wrong, I got about 6.9-7.0 litres which is about 7.3 US quarts so it looks like I got all I needed to after all. I have put about 6.5L back in and I will check the level and top it off tomorrow. I guess the joy of the extractor pump is you can easily remove excess oil although I agree it is not a good idea to waste it at the price it is.
The extractor is leaking around the fitting that is removed to pour excess oil away. Now that it is covered in oil it might seal better otherwise I will have to try and find a better O-ring.
Can oil level be measured on a cold engine? The manual is not very clear except to say wait 5 minutes after reaching operating temperature.

Is the usual "oil level ok" enough to go on? The manual says it will tell you if you need to add 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 etc litres or reduce oil volume.

Car said oil level ok, dyno mode showed 5.9 litres, then I ran it for 5 mins, shut it down, waited and then it said add 1.5 litres. Did that and now it says level ok again. I will have to use the dyno mode to show where it is now.
If anyone could please tell me how much it should say is in there using dyno mode, that would be great. I cannot see it anywhere on the forum.

When you bought the pump did the instructions say to tighten the screws along the top? There is a pump of a very similar design, and if the screws are not tightened, the pump won't hold vacuum properly.
Also, the hose that you use to extract the oil –
If cut at too big of an angle, it leaves too much oil in the sump (which may be why some folks say vacuuming doesn’t extract all the oil). If the hose is left flat, it may sit flat on the bottom of the pan and impede vacuum.

I have my oil level at 7.5 litres cold since 8 litres will occasionally set a reduce oil level alarm when the car is fully warmed up.

Mine usually reads what I put in, but the car is very sensitive to being on a level surface when reading the oil level. I've been off as much as 1.5 liters just by barely being on an uneven surface.
