Why you should check air filters after buying used car!

Popped open air box today just to check filters.
Bought car two months ago.

Apparently never changed before purchase!

Both filters clogged! One with cigarette butt in it!

Should net 20 hp after cleaning that **** up! New filters ftw!

Yup.......changed my filters the day I took delivery and they were very dirty. Even took small vac to the box itself to get out some more junk.

The problem is the maintenance interval is so expansive. I mean really, 60k miles?

Do you really need a DIY to change the air filter?

1. Remove front engine cover
2. Remove rear engine cover/airbox.
3. I can't remember if the screws are Torx or not, but remove the screws on the bottom of the air box.
4. Pull out old air filter.
5. Put in new air filter.
6. Do everything in reverse.

T25 Torx IIRC

Mine were even worse...cleaning them out produced about a pound of crap. I'd suggest an oil change immediately as well!

When buying a used car, people may want to consider the following approach - if there's no receipt or evidence that it's been done, it hasn't been. No receipt for the latest service means it hasn't been done. The average seller is not going to pay for anything more than a "for sale" sign.

It's also a good way of putting all maintenance items into a schedule your familiar with. I did it with the C55 and even though it wasn't cheap, all maintenance intervals are now in my schedule instead of relying of the good graces of the previous owner.

Some excellent advice. The parts guy at MB tried to tell me the transmission fluid had been done. On further investigation the service records included 1 liter only of fluid = not done.
