Any North Carolina Folks Around?

Hey Guys,

I've recently moved from California to North Carolina for College (Go UNC!) and I'm thinking about buying a car out here. Since I still have the AMG at home in the garage, I'm thinking about buying a less expensive car for out here that I don't really have to worry about.

What is a good insurance option for me? Are there any better insurance companies out here that I should know about?

I really want to buy an older Jeep Cherokee...

Any other car choices you think might suit me?

I don't want to spend more than 5k.

Thanks!

i actually just did the opposite last year moving from wilmington, nc to orange county, ca. i had state farm out there and have it here. cars are definitely cheaper out there, but mostly because they're more beat up. also coincidence that i had a 2000 jeep grand cherokee when i was out there. reliable with no major issues. make sure you get a 4x4 and you might consider a wrangler to hit the beaches out there. you can drive on them! good luck! go tar heels!

Perfect! Thanks for your response. I actually have statefarm as well. I really, for some odd reason, want an older Jeep Cherokee. Not a grand cherokee, but a cherokee.

I had good experience with esurance after being a statefarm customer for years.

I always liked Cherokee as well and I heard they are reliable, though really bad in gas mileage. My current beater is a 5 speed Porker 924s that gets around 38 mpg on the highway. It is light (2400 lbs), 150 HP, a lot of fun to drive and super cheap to buy as well.

I have '99 Jeep Wrangler with 65,000 on the engine (re-built Jasper Transmissions in 2008). Its a blast but I am looking for something in the same price class but a little bigger (maybe an early 90s Mitsu Montero). Anyways, I would be willing to work something out with you to sell it! PM me if interested.

The one with the surfboard isn't mine, its actually a pic of the owner's Jeep with the roof rack I bought from him on it. I currently have a steel basket mounted to the rack.

I'm not too set on a wrangler, but I will definitely keep it in mind. Thanks!

No worries at all. Good luck! Shouldn't be hard to find an old 4x4 for under $5000 in NC, just don't set your sights too high and you'll be set.

No, my sets are super low lol I don't need anything special. The car is going to sit outsidde anyways and North Carolina weather is a tad harsher on vehicles than California weather. That's one of the reasons I didn't bring my car here.

Theres a used car dealer that always has alot of trucks and such located at the corner of 3rd street and Dawson. Every time I drive by there i am amazed how cheap the wind shield stickers say.
Def get 4x4 because you will want to go to the North End. Thats the north end of Carolina Beach, just South of ILM (Wilmington)

We had State Farm but then switch to Geico, cut the premiums by half.

I may be moving to Wilmington in August.. Heading there from Tuesday to Sunday to check it out.

So may have another forum member in a small city.. how many C55's and C32's are in wilmington now?

Also I may be moving to just a standard apt.. but still will need to a place to work on the cars and store tools. Know of any car club type setups where you rent a warehouse? We did that in san diego. Turned out well.. and I've seen some places in the area that are dirt cheap.

I haven't seen too many AMG's around actually. I've not seen a single W203 AMG. The fact that I'm in a college town probably isn't helping at all either...

Yeah, I've been here for a while now and I've yet to see any modded cars. The car scene in California is just epic.

I've found most guys spend big and leave it stock. I've been working with a shop in Durham that does a lot of performance and appearance mods.

Well I'm in Chapel Hill, so I haven't seen many really nice cars around. Granted, I'm from the bay area in California. Ferrari's and Bentley's are seen on a day to day basis. Hell, Michael Kuzni (member on here) has an E63. I haven't seen one E63 this entire time I've been here. I think the weather may be a factor too. It seems cars here get beat on more than in California. I may be totally wrong though as I'm new to the area.

I've seen a few decent rides on Franklin St. I live out by falls lake so the local crowd is pick up trucks. If your ever in the area of Hillisborough St in Durham check out Euroclassics....www.euroclassicsltd.com. They consistently have something in there worth looking at. If you haven't been to the Cars and Coffee show in Cary, its worth the trip.

Yeah, I saw a Ferrari 360 Modena yesterday, and a Gallardo today. Still though, the modified car scene in the bay area cannot be topped lol

I know there is a Cars & Coffee thread but wanted to get the word out that we're going to try to park together for the October C&C. The idea is to park on the northern part of the lower lot: if we can get that row agaisnt the street...across from where the supercar red SL car was last time

I was there last time. That SL65 Black Series was gorgeous. It really made the 458 look plain and dull. The SL65 just has such a great presence, that even the 458 could not match.

Not sure If I told you but the SL65 owner also owned the Ferrari it was parked next to.
