Hitting REV limiter

All-

Has anyone else had this issue. Sometimes when taking off aggressively from a stop light, pedal all the way to the floor, I end up hitting the REV limiter. It will then shift to 2nd gear and it appears to work normally getting in 3rd, although at that point the pedal is not completely floored.

Is this normal? Should I NOT push the pedal all the way to the floor when taking off in first? Car has 78K on it. I bought it with 72K about a year ago and this has happened about 4-5 times since I have owned it. I am going to get a transmission flush next service, but is there anything else they should look at? Should I try the ECU reset?

Thanks
Pete

If that happened in C or S mode, its abnormal.

Sorry, forgot to mention this happens when in S mode. I am running 18x35x255 tires, would make any difference since they are slightly taller?

I'm confused by your question...you're saying if you floor it through a gear you're going to hit the REV limiter? That should be normal for any car, maybe I'm misunderstanding what you'r trying to say...

Not in all cars. Most automatics don't let you hit the rev limiter. However, our cars just nudge it then shift.

That's interesting, didn't know that...I guess since I've always driven a stick (until I just got the AMG) i thought all cars would hit it when you floor it and then shift...if you shift manually in an auto though, you should hit the limiter right?

Yeah, my car will hold the selected gear in manual mode up until it starts to bounce off redline. But if you drive any other automatic, let me know which ones will let you even hit the rev limiter.

I will try the ECU reset to see if that helps. What i have noticed is it hits the REV limiter, the limiter kicks in for a second or two which slows me down, then it shifts and I am off again. I doubt this is normal, but just wanted to ask. It seems it goes about 500 RPM to high before it shifts.

Ok, that is a different thing and could be a problem with any number of sensors. If you do not have the ability, take it to an idie and have them diagnose it.

Do you think the larger tires have anything to do with it? They are not much larger, but maybe just enough. I am running 18x35x255 instead of the stock 245 on the rears.

The tires shouldn't have anything to do with it...btw I noticed you're from around the DC area and you have pretty much the exact same two cars I do, lol, 2006 white c230 and black/black c55, only difference is my c230 interior is ash.

Wow, how about that. I got the C230 first and had it for about 2 years before getting the C55 which I have had for about a year now.

So your C230 is a 6 speed manual? If so, how do you like it? Looking back I wish I had gone with a manual, but at the time I was looking for a car that my wife could also drive. She does not drive stick. I used to have a 2001 Bullitt Mustang that was my FUN car which had a 5 speed in it. After reading about the C55 I got rid of the Bullitt and got the C55, which is a very fun car. My wife always asks me, why do you have two of the same cars. I try to tell her they are no where near the same, but she just does not get it. Someday she will drive the C55 and then realize that they are not the same car

I love the manual. Probably wouldn't like the car near as much without it. I mean, it's not really that fast of a car, but the manual is what makes it so much fun to drive, especially around curvy back roads. Where this car really shines is the handling, and it handles extremely well. I bought it June 2010, so about exactly 2 years ago with 49k, to date I'm about to hit 102k Very reliable, easy to work on (yes, MB is complex but I think it's complicated to figure out what to do, but once that is done, it actually makes a lot of sense why they arranged things the way they did).

Bought the C55 literally 2.5 weeks ago and I love the extra power, but I'm glad I have the C230 as a commuter car to keep the miles off the C55. I'm planning on taking the C55 to a track later this summer and just seeing how far I can take this thing

Now what would really be awesome is having the 6 speed manual in the C55...
