Replacing fuel pump as preventative maintenance?

My service adviser said that I should replace my fuel pump as preventative maintenance. I think she said somewhere around 120k mileage, and that I should wait til then to also replace my fuel filter since most fuel filters in her experience lasted much longer than the recommended replacement period.

My question is, do people really replace the fuel pump as preventative maintenance? Cause I've tried searching for it on the forums, and the only results are from people who have had theirs die, which doesn't seem to be the case for me (knock on wood). Though I do think I need to replace my CPS but that's covered in my next thread.

I would not touch it if it is working. Some have had failures but it should last the life of the car. If you want it to last longer don't drive around on a near empty tank as the fuel cools the pump motor.

Wait until AFTER the factory recommended service interval to replace the fuel filter, but change a fuel pump that doesn't show any signs of trouble?

I think you may want to consider a new service writer.

They often abruptly fail rather than cause problems slowly and failure is not common. I would not touch it either. It will be a lot of work, $$ and most likely you will never have a problem with the one in there. The filter is a food idea though.

I can say my pump went out at the mileage you were warned about. 130k to be exact... I do think our fuel pumps have a limited life span, but just don't see fuel pump being preventative maintenance because it is rather expensive. A good idea if you're worried is to order a pump, and keep it laying around in case of failure to prevent down time. You can search for my fuel pump thread to find more information, and a link to website that sales for good price.

ahah she's a really great rep for what she is. totally down to earth and knows that i like to try to do as much as i can at home. what mileages did you guy's fuel pumps catastrophically fail at? I'm at about 90k and at 10k/year i can still hold off about 2 years before buying that fuel pump then!
