CPS failure?
So our car died yesterday just as the wife pulled in the gas station. Had to have it towed to MB dealer and they said the crank shaft position sensor failed. No check engine light but I did have a rough idle and random or lower shift points for the last 5K. The car has only 38K on it, I also had one fail on my E420. Has anyone else had this problem?

I've been fortunate enough not to encounter this yet. I'm pretty sure this has happened to a few C55/W203 owners on here. Certainly not a comfortable thought knowing that this occurred without warning and left you stranded. I wonder if some preventative maintenance (like the voltage regulator issue) can be performed?

Yes, CPS will cause all sorts of funny problems, since it isnt getting a proper signal. I had mine fail when I was at a gas station. If you got it running you would notice the CEL light is on.

It happened to me about 6 months ago. I bought the part for $50, online, and found a mechanic friend that installed it for $100. It's certainly not rocket science but, on the C32 that bugger is nearly impossible to get to. After watching the contortions and wrangling it took to reach it, I realized it was the best $100 I've spent on that car.
If you search it, you should find dozens of threads on this subject.

As I know CPS always die 'suddenly', no symptom before, engine just stall.
And it is heat related items, engine stall after heated up, and can start again after cooled. It is a cheap parts and just 1 screws to mount, but quite hard to replace as its location in the engine is very bad and hard to reach......

Yup, I have not done it on a C32, but on my C55, it is really difficult to figure out at first since you are doing it without laying eyes on it. However, if you look and feel the part you ordered you can figure it out. Its on the very backside of the engine towards the firewall on the drivers side.

Keeping a spare is REALLY a good idea. But if, you're stuck, let the engine cool down and you could still drive home or to your mechanic. Once you kill the engine, you'll have to do the same cool down again.
