Mobil1 0W-40 now available in the 5 quart jug
Just saw it at Advance for 37.99, finally Mobil1 has started offering it in this size. Hopefully Walmart will start carrying it for 22.99!

Mobil 1 motor oil (incl. AMG preferred 0W-40) on sale!
Mobil 1 motor oil in either 5 single quarts, or 5.1 quart jugs on sale during March 2013 at Advance Auto Parts for $33.99 INCLUDING a Mobil1 Oil Filter! It's called the "MOBIL 1 OIL CHANGE SPECIAL". My mailed coupon flyer, the in-store flyer, and the online flyers (on pg.5) all have the special listed as:
$33.99 - 5 Plus Qts Jug OR 5 Qts of Mobil 1 Full Synthetic Motor Oil AND ANY Mobil 1 Oil Filter - OFFER AVAILABLE IN-STORE ONLY"
(While I only use OEM style Fleece Oil Filters (such as Mann HU7185X in my Mercedes-Benz vehicles), I get a Mobil1 Oil filter that my family or friends without the joy of Mercedes ownership can use.)

You are better using 5w-40, it controls the sludge buildup better in these engines, MB recommends it.

Nada, 0-40 for Non AMG as that is a formulation for better fuel economy. 5w-40 is recommended for AMG's because our motors run richer and tend to sludge quicker. Check your service manual or call a dealership. The only difference you will notice driving is on cold start up, the lifters will be noisy so AMG recommends driving below 2k for the first few minutes.

229.5
If you have a non-diesel this is the spec you want to select an oil. M1 0-40 European Formula (not ESP that is for 229.51 diesels and some N/A engines) and the fleece filter has been recommended for AMGs forever.
Check your OM or the MBUSA website to double check for your specific model or VIN. Indeed there are a few gas engines that need the 229.51 oil but most do not. If you don't believe me check with Glyn Ruck.
The M1 5-40 is a bulk 55 gallon oil sold to dealerships at a favourable price. If your engine corresponds to the 229.5 spec this oil is not listed to the best of my knowledge.
I use M1 0-40 in all our cars whether N/A or S/C. The dealer put 5-40 M1 in the G and the lifters were noisy at startup which is when the most wear is as the OP said. When I changed to the 0-40 the starup noise went away. I use 0-40 and take it easy until I hit 80 dergrees C. I have cut my oil change interval to 8k miles however esp. on the G wagen. Why mess with success?

Thank you grane and lkfoster, and especially Glyn M Ruck for the countless posts regarding the science behind AMG's choice of 0W-40.
There were some nice additions in my similar post started in the W211 AMG forum including even better pricing from NAPA and qualifying rebate which lowers the price to $3.59/qt!!

MB also said that our (C43) transmissions had lifetime fluid. They certainly made a LOT of repair money on that mistake as witnessed in these and other forums, and have admitted their fault - at OUR expense! (My MB quote was $7,000!!!)
And many will say that those destroyed transmissions, and additional blunders (reference fuel leaking W211s), also drastically damaged their reputation... without doubt!
Believe what you will and buy what you wish.
I put 5W-40 in my C280 Sport, and 0W-40 in my AMG motors.
