Voltage Regulator replaced "Easy"

Guys,
I just wanted to share that on the C55 it is very easy to replace the Voltage regulator without removing the alternator from the car.

There is plently of room to fit your hands and tools. I highly recommend doing this replacement while keeping the alternator in the car, it only took 30 minutes to do the replacement.

If you have any questions on doing this just shoot me a pm.

Thanks,
Derek

You can literally do this whole job with the following tools:

8mm - splash guard bolt removal
13mm - starter positive power cable
15mm
phillips head screw driver.
Mirror - makes job easier

That is all you need. Let me know when the time comes and you replace it.

Basically here is the writeup.

Reference the images of the alternator in this writeup. It has the exact same layout and even uses a mercedes part on this Porsche.

Unplug the battery! Don't forget to do this first!

Access:
- Remove the bottom front splash guard from underneath the car. 8mm screws. This gives you easy access to the backside of the alternator where the voltage regulator is. You will then have clear view of the back of the alternator and plenty of room to work.

Removing rear plastic cover from the alternator:

This rear cover is held on by a 15mm nut, two 13mm nuts, and a phillips head screw at the top.

- Remove the positive power lead that attached to the alternator. This is the first 13mm nut.
- Unplug the electrical connector.
- Remove second 13mm nut that is located on the same bolt that the first 13mm nut was.
- Remove the 15mm nut that is located right next to the 13mm nut. "This is a very shallow nut so be sure not to "*****" the head.
- Remove the top center phillips head screw. I used a mirror to help me see it better.
- Now remove this cover and you will have access to the voltage regulator.

Voltage Regulator Removal:
- This is held on by 3 phillips head screws.
-Remove these 3 phillips head screws and the voltage regulator will easily pop out.

Install new voltage regulator:
- Place the new voltage regulator into place and screw the 3 screws in.
- Note that the right side of this regulator is attached by two screws and the left side only uses one. The top of the two screws on the right hand side of the regulator attached to a "horse shoe" looking piece.

Reinstall Cover:
- Reinstall the back cover for the alternator in the reverse order as removal.

Reconnect the power cable to the alternator and plug the car battery back in.

Job Done.

Many Thanks Quickvr4, you were not wrong, nice and easy 45 mins start to finish with the alternator still in place, just sump shield off and away you go, great advice.

A quick note to anyone reading this - to clarify my vehicle had no warning light and was charging but very erratic voltage 13.00 to 14.9 up and down like a yo yo, also my interiour like was pulsing like a heart beat with the engine running and the 3rd brake light (led one in the centre) would go off after 2-3 seconds with the brake pressed. other than that no other problems but knew somthing wasnt right and hey presto all sorted. the date stamp would lead me to belive it has been changed before and the car only has 57k on it so there not to great i reakon , and for £30 from the main dealer i may keep one handy for next time.

Thanks again.

PS someone with more forum knowledge may want to put this info somewhere else for others as im a newbie to all this.
