 Plz need advice, supercharger problem...

Hey guys,

I've bought Francoisisp's C32 from San Diego couple of months ago. I read back in his posts he had a small front accident about a year ago, although he told me the car never been in a accident. Anyhow, the overall condition of the car is very good, he was the second owner and took good care of it since he is a mechanic..

The supercharger sounds a little rough with stationary, I drove the car back from San Diego to Phoenix, and around here and no problems. Me and my mechanic replaced today the idler pulley on the left side, with a OEM mercedes roller and bearing complete, hoping this was the problem but it wasnt...

Our guess is the right-side pulley with the clutch system. This pulley doesn't work once the car exceeds 2000 rpm if Im correct, then its disconnected? Since the car had some front damage big chance the pulley got hit in the front, even minor, and caused the bearings to sound like they do. This is a costly repair.

Do you guys have any advice what to do, we are 80% sure its the front of the supercharger. My options and please your input or other alternatives?

- Complete used supercharger, 1300 in Cali with warrantee?
- New front part of supercharger, 1500?
- Used supercharger from eBay or junkyard, 400-475?
- Forum member that did pulley tune and sells me his complete original front part? (Or is this not possible?)

Please your input, the car is definitely worth investing some money in but need to keep it within boundaries.

Thank you all in advance for your input!

Congrats on your purchase. Sounds like your car needs SC pulley bearing. $55 from NeedsWings, even cheaper from NSK.

Thanks ddtham for you response, admire your carcollection with the C32 and a beautiful 911, impressive! : We have actually already replaced the top left, complete guidance pulley on the photo, this was not the problem.

It is most likely the pulley (clutch) directly on the front of the supercharger, on the photo on the right top.

Am I right?

Thanks for the compliment! My c32 is out for several weeks to get the new Rcompart's intercooler and plenty of other maintenance items, so I am stuck with the 911 for now. Can't complain though!

What you replaced is the idler pulley, the sc pulley bearing is behind/inside the supercharger pulley itself. Do a search as this is a common issue with c32 and is a relatively easy DIY. All you need is a press to, uh press the bearing into the sc pulley.

Could you post a photo of your 911, that is a car I would love to own one day, actually was talking about it the other day. If I want to own a classic it would a old (real) Porsche (air cooled). They're beautiful and have so much character and class!

So if this is the problem then you just made my day! My mechanic is specialized in VW and Audi but is very knowledgeable. But this car with supercharger is relatively rare and he is not familiar with it. Im also not familiar with the car but slowly getting there.. I find the supercharger-system on this car quite complicated.

I have done some more research on the forum.

https://mbworld.org/forums/c32-amg-c...ns-thread.html

On the first photo in this thread, pulley 5, electromagnetic clutch is the SC Pulley? Where does SC stand for?

So remove this one bearing and replace should do the trick. Then I will loose the slight tolerance/space on the axle that I can see while running stationary and the horrible sound that comes with it?

Where and which specific bearing would be the best to fit, would like to stick to OEM or OEM quality!

Thanks so much already, definitely made my day

SC in this case, stands for supercharger and it is the number 5 pulley on the diagram. Most mechanics and dealerships would suggest complete sc assembly replacement when the bearing goes bad. Almost all C32 owners however have replaced sc bearing one time. I even think that there is a diy somewhere in this forum for it.

Our oem sc bearing is made by NSK. Needswings.com has it in stock I believe.

On the 911, I was contemplating buying another AMG (E55) or probably even sell my 32 to buy a c63 earlier this year. That was my thought process until I test drove an old 82 911 sc targa out of curiosity. I was sold on the aircooled engine sound, how hard I had to work the old 915 transmission and open air motoring. I went back to purchase that car the next day, but it was sold. Nonetheless, my search continued, and I looked at 964 c4, 996 c2 and 996 c4. I kept going back to the raw driving experience of the 911 sc though, and decided to concentrate on finding an sc.

I found my car less than a month later in a different Platinum Beige metallic and two tone seats and still loving it. Sure the ac works when it wants to, hard as hell clutch, MUCH slower than my c32 and I come out of the car smelling like oil, but if I were to stick to one car, I would probably sell the 32 and keep the sc.

Here is a picture of them both when I changed the muffler on the sc.

Very nice! Thanks for posting that photo!

Love the rawness of the old Porsches, those were REAL drivers cars. And they are still great. Nice collection you got going, I'm turned from being a BMW guy to a AMG guy, the C63 is such a beast.. A couple of years and they will be more affordable, def got my heart set on one.

Good luck with you collection and thanks for clearing that up for me, going to order the part right away.

So final question, haha.. Just order the single replacement bearing, no additional seals or bolt, and should be good to go right? Thnx

Yes, that is it. Once your mechanic takes out the supercharger pulley, it will all make sense.

Make sure he keeps track of the distance of the clutch plate and replicate that with the new bearing.

Hey Mike, thanks, definitely the look I was aiming for..! And Supercharger should be good, just the bearing hopefully, having it put in next week. How are you? Enjoying that beach life?

Yea thanks so much again for having me borrow the stuff!!! you should check out the (relatively) new post about carbon interior part trimming. Its actually a local guy from PHX trying to develop a kit for the W203. He is willing to cut people a deal that are willing to help develop by sending him their trimmings. It is too much for me, but you might consider it?

https://mbworld.org/forums/c32-amg-c...rior-trim.html

Don't forget the throttle response reset when you get back!

https://mbworld.org/forums/c32-amg-c...et-smokes.html

It really works!!!

Also met up with my neighbors brother, nice C32 as well. We want to go to the car meet in Scottsdale on a saturday night, you in?

Soo, got the bearing in today. Went to my mechanic, took a good hour and the old bearing came out with a press. Had the new bearing in the freezer and on ice to the show. Didn't particularly slide in but with the press it was fairly easily. Put everything back together and runs like a dream.

So for everyone replacing the SC-pulley bearing from NSK. USE THE CODE-3 installation guide, helped us a lot. There is one clamb on the rubber part of the aluminum supercharger cooling/oil system, (just close on the right side thats in the way), simply loosen the clamb and slide down, then you will have enough clearance to remove the SC-pulley.

Make sure put the spacing of the SC-pulley to the clutch between 0.2 and 0.3 mm, tutorial makes a mistake saying 20-30mm, thats def not right. Fasten the bolt upfront at 20 NM torque and you should be good to go!

Thanks do some research on the forum saved myself around 2000, total spend 67 NSK bearing and 70 for one hour work = 137!

Thanks and hopefully somebody could use these directions..

No worries, code 3 was a supplier.

There is a manual/tutorial pdf file on the bottum of the first post in this thread.

https://mbworld.org/forums/c32-amg-c...ns-thread.html

This is meant as a guide to install new pulley, but defenitely helped me out for visual support..

Also use the rest of the info in this thread...

You can order the bearing at needswings.. Total 60-70.

Would advice you to look for qualified mechanic to put it together, shouldnt take more than 1,5.. You need a bearing press, to get old out and new in. I also put the bearing in the freezer and on ice to the shop. The car was warm but we still needed the press, but was more easy..
