Japanese sources say...

I have been reading articles on Japanese MB magazines that MB will continue using the V6 supercharger configuration, but will be utilizing the 3.7 liter in the ML 350.

Anyone can elaborate if this is still true? Or is it a pretty much done deal that V8 is the deal? I can still see it having a quad exhaust if displacement have been increased.

at least the c32 don't have what looks like almost another exhaust opening in the rear but is actually half the size of the exhaust opening and houses a can't be seen tow-hook

i heard that c55 will have the LED taillights, just like the s-class (at least for the sedan). that would be a good mod for 2001+ W203, if it really exists.

Looking at the 3rd picture, if you take away all the black tape and imagine, the C55's nose looks just like the CLk's.

Also, is it possible that the C55 will get more power than the CLK55 due to better breathing with the quad exhaust? But I would think the C55 can't be more powerful than the CLK55 since the CLK costs a lot more. Will find out soon.

uhhh ok.... so explain why theyd make a 3.5 litre super charged v6 engine when they already have a 3.2 litre super charged v6 engine......... that .3litre isnt gonna make much of a difference. it has to be bumped up to a v8 or whats the point?

The 3.5 is a newer more advanced engine, it is the replacement for the 3.2. They save money by consolidating drivetrains.

And they could turn up the boost just a bit and easily get 375+hp out of this engine. And in the picture of the rear end, it looks to me like it says C35, underneath the black tape.

i believe it will be the C55, taking the engine from the current normally-aspirated W209 CLK55, which has 362 hp and 376 lb/ft, at 5750 and 4000rpm respectively. power might fluctuate a bit, since the exhaust will be different, correct me if i'm wrong, i assumed it will be like the S54 M-coupe vs M3. heard the C55 will have 5.4L SOHC V8 24-valve with 11.0:1 compression ratio.

i have a question though: this will replace the C32? i heard somewhere a rumour that the C32 and C55 will be sold at the same time, because of drastic price differences, but i was kind of skeptical for AMG to produce two distinct cars for the same chassis. i kinda hope its true though, because i just got my C32 in November, and this would suck if the 55 were much better. quad exhaust is ok, i can do that later on custom-job, and updated LED tailights like the facelifted-W220 is ok, but it better not have a different dash or console changes or something drastic, or even seats.

what do you guys think will be potentially-faster if the C55 does in fact have the W209 CLK55 engine? i know the bigger displacement is an advantage in terms of torque and n/a tuning possibilities can pose a threat, but do you think it can beat an evosport-tuned C32 (which is what i plan to get , stage I that is + SL55 intake)?

My guess is that if the C55 weighs the same as the C32 and has roughly the same peak HP & TQ but with it being available at a wider range of the power band maybe it will be 1-2 tenths quicker 0-60, 1/4 mile, etc. It will likely weigh a little more and not beat the C32 by any huge margin. It will probably never match the autocar mag test of 0-60 in 4.6 for the C32. It will likely have much more consistent mag test results that are better than the 5.2 the C32s seem to have been running as of late. Probably lots of 4.8-5.0s in its future. My 1/4 mile guess is 13.1-13.3 @107-109MPH.

I would bet my AMG that mercedes would not sell a C32/C35 alongside a C55 with only 20 more horsepower. Either the C35/C55 will replace the C32 (which is almost certain) or there will be a C35 kompressor *and* a C55 kompressor, probably detuned to around 440hp so it doesn't take away the performance exclusivity of the E55 or SL55.

Now if only they could add 4Matic, Audi sales would witness some unintended decelleration.

I read from rennteam.com and the new SLK/C55 will probably get the new direct-injection V8. This is an all new V8 based on the new 3.5L V6 with ~270HP and direct-injection.

If this is so, I would expect the new engine will be more fuel efficient, cleaner burning, and will probably put out more than the current 362HP of the current engine in the CLK55. Also, I would assume that the CLK will also get the new V8 if the C55 is getting the new engine. The current sohc V8 has been out for a long time and is due to be replaced next year, so it will be less likely that the SLK/C55 will get the old sohc V8 only to be replaced in an year's time.

Well if you had the same budget that was under five figures the modded C32 probably would be tough for the modded N/A C55 to match. If you had a budget of $12K or so then the C55 would have a supercharger and the C32 wouldn't be keeping up. Comparing modded cars in theory is hard to do. Stock for stock the C55 with 360ish HP isn't going to be a big step on from the C32 in straight line performance. With the engine choice more apparent now its really key to see how they manage the weight of the new car. That will determine how the chips fall.

C55 info...

Eddie –

I can say with 99.5% certainty (that .5 is left for the likely hood of MB changing their entire product plan for the next 4 years) that the is no C35 on the way and that the C55 will never have a compressor (in series production at least – AMG specials are a different story – give the money and you can always have a one-off car). The 3 valve engine is to be eliminated in short fashion so making a new version, certifying it for production and emission standards, only to replace it in a year makes no sense.

As for both cars existing side my side (C35 and C55), this two has a next to nothing chance. That would be pointless for there would be little difference between the two and why continue to build a kompressor V6 if it only will be used in 1 production vehicle (again design and production costs are to high when only allocated to 1-1.5 years of limited series production). In reality no AMG official has spoken of a C35 but most will allude to the existence and planed production of a C55 (all those photos above are confirmed V8 powered C55 prototypes). The SLK55 is near release so this all will be resolved in short order. MB has already confirmed the deletion of all Kompressor motors for future versions of the AMG motor program so I see no chance of a C55k being that it would exist only for 1 year. Again this car my be produced in very short runs in Germany but importation of such a vehicle is basically impossible.

As for the specs of the C55 Direct Injection Gas Motor, here is my personal train of thought. The SLK350 makes 272 hp and this equates to 77.7 hp per liter. So 77.7x5.5 should yield about 427.35hp (assuming the same efficiency for the two motors). Granted this figure seems very high it is simply a place to start a debate. When you think about AMG they tends to make motors that have a higher hp/liter rating than a stock MB/DC motor (through improved flow with upgraded cam shafts headers and performance catalytic converters). In this case I can safely say AMG would not make a 450 hp C55 for that would make the E55 obsolete in terms of performance. So my take would be that AMG’s 5.5L motor will make around 400-420hp when released in the two cars. This makes it a fair contender for the upcoming RS4 and V8 M3. I could be totally off base but I will say a 370 hp V8 will be something few people will long to purchase.

Kevin –

The weight of the new DI gas motor is expected to be slightly less than the outgoing 3 valve motor. If this is the case the new C55 should be about equal in weight to the C32 but its weight will have a lower center of gravity (due to the lack of a blower on top of the motor and no intercooler in the front bumper). This will aid in chassis dynamics and from what I hear the C55 should be a step forward in the department (my fingers are crossed!)

So given the possible hp outputs of the new DI motor, I think 0-60 times should be in the 4.6-4.8 second range. 1/4 mile times could be around 12.8 – 13.1 (with grip being the limiting factor again) depending on rear end gearing. AMG could give the car serious hp but then slow it down with a 2.65 or 2.82 rear end ratio (C32 has a 3.06)The autocar test was an anomaly and no one has ever come close to replicating this figure (with a stock car). AMG allegedly issued some pre-production SL55’s that were far faster than the production spec cars and I think autocar may have received a “aggressively tuned” C32 for that test – or seriously low intake temps with a high level of traction). AMG of course never confirmed this (would be terrible advertising) but one test showed the SL55 beating a Lambo Murcielago to 150 mph by a good margin.
