Installing Factory NAV in a 2002 C32 (US Model)

When buying a NAV unit (Part.No.A203 827 53 42) for my 2002 C32, do I also need to purchase a wiring loom and GPS antenna?

I was under the assumption that US model W203's came pre-wired with the wiring loom and GPS antenna.

What else will I need to do after installing the NAV to get all the features activated?

Thanks

Factory Nav Unit

Sorry, I can't answer you question, although I am sure that someone out there will. You raised a question for me, though. Is the nav system which you are considering installing exactly the same as the one which could be ordered as an option with the 2002 C32? Also, how much$ and where do you order it from? Thanks for the info!

It is the same as the factory unit. If you keep your eyes open on ebay or other resale sites around the web you can find them available here and there.

I haven't purchased one yet, but am looking to get a total cost of ownership behind the project.

I think, if you pull out the radio and look behind it you will the see GPS cable, if it exists, could also look in trunk for splitter?

Look at the yellow heading:

""COMAND 2.0 Retrofit for a 2001 C-320""

The above link has lots of info and pictures.

Thx for the info M444. The DYI looks pretty complete, I think I'm going to give it a shot.

Can anyone tell me more definitely if the US 2002 C32 comes with the GPS antenna and correct wiring harnesses? I want to avoid taking the whole car apart just to find out.

C32 purchase

I bought it January 31 of this year. Day after my b-day. Woke up hung over and decided I needed to ditch the MDX (mommymobile) and buy myself a nice present. Presented the idea to wifey, sure that she would shoot it down. She did not, and two hours later we were signing the papers. Actually, the only thing that I will miss about the MDX was its absolutely awesome navigation system. Is the MBZ C32 nav a CD or DVD based system? How many discs to cover the U.S.?

That just goes to show you: It can't hurt to ask!! Good show.

I've seen the Mercedes NAV and it's one of the worst ones out there. The Japanese do it MUCH better and I even like BMW's better. But I feel the look completes the dash much better and even if it is not that great, it can still be usefull. I used to have one on my M3 and I really liked it and used it often.

It's CD based, no idea how many to cover the US though.

Depends on who you buy it from. I just(last night) self-installed a new US spec COMAND, purchased from Steve at MbenzNL. He provided everything I needed to install the COMAND. Including a new wiring loom, GPS antenna, and special tools to remove the center instrument cluster. Took about an hour. Works like a champ. Steve doesnt provide the NAV cd, I need to order that on my own.

The W203's do not come Completely pre-wired for COMAND. They do come Mostly pre-wired for COMAND.

An underdash gps antenna comes with the mbenznl package. While the US W203 has a GPS antenna pre-installed, the wire is not run up to the center console, hence the need for the underdash antenna. There is an extra loom provided by mbenznl, i'm not sure offhand exactly what it's functionality is, only that it snaps into the pre-existing wiring and then into the COMAND. It's pretty intuitive what to do - if you go with the mbenznl package.

Check out: http://www.mbenznl.com/mods/comand.shtml

comand for our cars. . .

From what I know, the necessary wiring is already on board all US C32s or C classes. All you need is the wiring loom and a gps antenna.

I am also looking to get one for my C32, found one going for sale on eBay for only 900 bucks!

Steve quoted me a price of 1,500...going to try to get one at a bargain, if not I'll get it from Steve.

Thx for the DIY link guys

I installed nav myself into '02 c240 like 6 months ago.

CD based nav uses 11 cds to cover US (I only use CD 1 anyway)

It was a pretty easy install (if you've done minor car audio equipment install before)

There are a few things I had to do (since some connectors are different between crap radio and crap nav...hehe) there are a few pins that have to be moved and by comparing the pin chart of the two systems and some common sense you can do this pretty easily

(I think Steve simplifies this with a modified connector so that you wont have to move pins...if not, I lied)

The 'hard' part was conecting to the speed signal from the bottom of the fuse box (yes I removed fuse box in engine compartment and tapped into speed sensor from bottom of it)

Anyway aside from the actual NAV I had to buy a GPS Antenae, a connector plug from the dealer to hook in CD Changer (and don't forget the fragile little metal pins) and finally a wire loom to tap into the speed signal. This ran me a grand total of $964.38.

After all this junk...My nav works great and it looks nice. Whether there is an easier way i dunno but $500 more for some piece of mind can be worth it if you're not as crazy as me to be doing surgical procedures on a highly 'electronisized' (new word) piece of equipment (ur car)

Enjoy,
TammamB
