I dont think they work, they might be encripted or something.

I was able to backup and burn a copy of the original nav-CD in my 2002. As I recall, the copy burnt onto CD-R media worked as a nav-CD.
This January I bought a copy of the then most recently available nav-CD set, which I think was based on 2003 map data. I tried backing up the nav-CD from that set that I normally used and noticed that it seemed to be copy protected, as it worked fine in the car but gave me various errors when I tried to make a back-up copy.

i was able to back up copies of the most recent 2004 dvd nav disk as well as the new 2004 cd nav set (all disks). you are right though, the disks have securerom or some other protection on them that makes it a little harder to copy but it can be done.
