C55 with possibly bad oil pump? Give a listen.

Hi all, been lurking around here for a while while owning my C55 for the last few years. I guess I got unlucky and it seems my oil pump may have gone. Give a listen here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskMechanics/comments/weiee0/mercedes_v8_no_belt_oil_pump_noise/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

Let me know, the price of this through both an independent shop and the dealership is around $3,500. Thanks!

Change the pickup tube oring, it’s probably sucking air at this point.

a good indicator would also be a metallic shine in the oil. Use a bright light or direct sunlight. Wouldn't be much but you would see a light reflection of material even small particulate. You would think you would hear alot of lifter noise if failed which I did not hear but would also check oring as mentioned in previous reply for pickup. Pump has internal filter screening which may have blockage but if your in that far replacement is always my best friend at that point

How does the pickup tube relate to this?

Good point. It always had lifter noise when it was cold, but never showed this problem at all. It's now been confirmed by a few people verbally, but has not had a good actual diagnosis by a mechanic first. Good point on the pickup tube, I think that's what the other response meant.

It’s a common issue on these engines. Loud pumps are typically sucking air, but if you can’t do the work yourself, I would certainly get a new oil pump and oring, as the labor is the real costly part

Would that sucking in of air cause stalling as well?

No not unless the engine is going to lock up from lack of oil, at that point no oil pump will fix anything
