$63,000 for my new C55 engine!!

$43,000 AWP, $53,000 retail and about $10,000 for install!! I'll get the final bill in a couple of days. Engine replaced due to "pourous oil bridge" defect in Mftd process. It happened to one other car ibn the world so far. Oil was leaking out, more when hot.

Good news: extended warranty 7yr/100,000 miles.

correct me if i'm wrong but i think the engine replacement was a warrenty issue caused by a defective 'oil bridge'.

Now if I'm wrong and he PAID 63k for an engine..well...

But I have a feeling he didnt.

The way I read the post, it appears Mercedes-Benz is paying for the replacement of an engine under warranty. Not sure that warranted the over-the-top value judgement. I'm thinking we need to engage the brain before we post, people.

Looks like warranty. I know it was like 18k when I toasted my transmission. Hence why I'll probably never mod my car...

still sucks to think of that a C55 engine would cost that much...

I remember this guy had a C36 transplant into his C220 long time ago in 97 when I went to a tuner shop and he said the 36 engine cost him $20-25k.

I think this is a case of the dealer over inflating the cost of the job to try and add value to the process. I just got of the phone with my MB Shop Foreman. I asked him what it would cost if I blew up my engine and it wasn't covered under warranty?? $36K Canadian>>>>>> Thats out of the crate plus re and re.

No wonder that MB is not making money...if I were MBUSA and had to decide about warranty stuff like this - I would have MB Stuttgart ship over that ONE C55 US spec engine with less then 100 kilometer they have in stock...considering the fact that it is "only" 20.000USD...that leaves quite a lot for shipping...

greetingz,

I would guess that the tuners woudl know right? Like Kleemann, Evosport, Renntech - a simple call to them would give us an answer. Cause really, if it costs that much - I woudl have a hard time justifying modding my car beyond basic exhaust, headers and intake.

Yesterday I also heard about a C55 engine failure from a friend of mine. Conrod through the block. Apparently it was caused by a big end failure. The engine is replaced under guarantee, and the price is R360,000 ($60,000) whereas a new C55 here is R570,000 ($96,000). He told me MB had no problems to replace the engine. At least their service is good.

I would think with repairs of that magnitude, you could demand a new car.

I do not think so. That's what warranty is for.

Depends on the locality, but I think a certain percentage of retail value worth of repairs qualifies you for a lemon law buy back.

Is this for real? I think the 3.8 conversion for the c32 is under $10k from Renntech. If the motors are really that much I'll be departing with my car prior to warranty expiration...that is just sick! If the motor does go, I'd by a 5-acre plot of land, a generator, and set the c32 up as a trailer...YEEEEEEE HAWWWW

C32 AMG
price is way off

A 996TT motor *is* around $60K, but that is a whole different beast than a C55 motor. When my C32 was in the bad frontal wreck, I didn't actually get a new motor (fortunately it was smashed back and down off its mounts which saved the motor itself from being smashed) but there was talk of it and I believe it was around $20-25K.

And lemon laws vary by state in the US, but they are basically all similar to Ohio's which is:

Any of these can trigger it:
1) A major defect that poses the imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm that wasn't fixed in one try
2) A serious safety threat that wasn't fixed in three tries
3) Any combination of substantial issues requiring 6 or more trips to the dealer for the same thing
4) The vehicle being out of commission at the dealer for 30 or more days

All of these have to occur in the first year in Ohio (some other states have more consumer friendly times of > 1 year). It is generally interpreted that if 1-3 starts BEFORE one year but continues past it, that still counts.

FWIW.
