Question "Tornado" air intake products

Has anyone tried or know of anyone using those "Tornado" metal air intake diffusers ? They say they increase gas mileage , horsepower ,etc. I tried installing one on my girlfriends 00' C230K but it didn't fit so I returned it. Anyone have anything on this ?

Think of this: if it worked so well, don't you think the engineers at a progressive company like BMW, Mercedes, Honda, or Toyota would have already come up with this, or licensed it for use in their cars?
