Window tint

I got my car with very dark tint, is it easy to peel off? I don't want to look like a drug dealer. Maybe I will get a lighter tinting job. You really can't see inside in a sunny day! Want some light in the car. Anyone knows?

Thank you

I did it once and it's not that easy. But if you want another tinting job why don't you give the car to a tinting shop? So it's clean done for the next tinting job who has do be done be a tinting shop!

Let the profesionals do their work, just my $ 0.02

hey man im a window tinter.. taking tint off is easy, but getting the glue off is the hard part, before u do it if u do, roll ur windows down all the way, tape the inside of the side channels... then peal it off. grab some spray cleaner, and a couple flat ravor blades... good luck! its messy , but it'll save u some $$, unless ur gonna tint it again,, cause then id say take it to the pros cause we hate when people do **** theirself cause it usually makes it tougher to fix their **** first haha GOOD LUCK MAN!

Tint problem!

My black C43 has dark tint too. I bought it like that. I wouldn't mind it so much, but my wife is embarrassed driving it with these dark windows. Anyways, there is a lady in my office, and she said she got pulled over twice (got a warning once) cause her windows, and mine is a lot darker than hers.

Anyone knows how much it'll cost(approx.) the get rid of the current ones and put lighter ones in?

Thank you

I am sure it varies by location, but basically the tint guys around here said it would basically double the cost of the tint, I can't honestly remember an actual dollar figure, but I do remember them saying it would be nearly as much to remove as to apply new. Newbie would probably have a good idea on this.

Update for Sinister

I just came from tinter, I was told it would cost $300 for taking the old one off, and installing a diff. tint. New will be like mirror, will reflect the sunlight. He said my current ones are about 8-10% (whatever that means), and illegal!

Is $300 good price (lifetime warranty)?

Is it 5%? Mine is 20% on the BMW and it isn't too bad, I also just had my 190e tinted at 20%, I have to get new pics up, but I agree with most of the poeple, take it to the shop and let them remove it.

The lower the percentage, the darker the tint will be. 5% is considered "Limo" tint. 20% is very dark too. 35%&50% are considered lighter shades. You want mirror tint???? You might want to consider that film. I suggest that you actually see a car with "mirror" before making a decision.

Yours is very nice? What kind is that? Stock? Since my car is black, I gotta pick a good one. I hope someone would give me some a good advice. I certainly DO NOT wanna cheesy color. I want elegance or sporty look. Since the car is black, It is hard for me to decide. The owner of tint shop showed me his Supra, he had the mirrors, but his car was silver.

I am certainly not a chrome fan, and I don't want mafia or drug dealer look. And advices are sincerely appreciated. Considering the car is black, black leather, and it gets HOT here in summer! VERY HOT! (South GA)

There are numerous threads on tint, but I'll give you my own 2 cents. I like the blue stock tint, but wanted a shade darker and yet still retain that blueness. Plus, my interior is black which makes tint darker as well. My tint is 50% grade (actually it 42% when measured for darkness) on all 4 side windows and 35% on the rear. I went with the back a shade darker as recommended by my tint installer to create a more balance look (considering the window is bigger) and all my other window are light. All 4 windows have moleskins/synthetic strips to help prevent scratches...highly recommended. This usually cost about $25 per window. My personal opinion is not to go with mirror or limo tint. I'm sure others will chime in. A safe tint grade is 35% all the way around considering your car is black. Also, another thing to consider is state laws and how strict your city is when it comes to tint. You might find yourself getting a ticket and having to remove it.
You're going to get numerous opinions on this forum. Take your time in deciding and actually see black cars with various shades. Check out the Official Threads of members posting their cars. You should get some good ideas from there.
Lastly, if you hae NAV it's recommended that you go with non-metallic tint to prevent interference. I can't validate if this holds try though.

I removed the tint off my front windows with a Scunge (sp?) Steamer.Started in one corner with a razor blade and once I got about a inch pulled off I hit it with the steamer in between the glass and the tint and it pulled right off.Wiped down the glass with Goo-gone and you never knew the tint had been applied. Took about 1-1/2 hours to do both windows.

as far as removing tint....
i'm with e320newbie....i used to tint my own windows back in the days.
getting tickets and removing it was a pain in the...(PITA)...I used windex and a few razors. it takes a lot of time. even more pain is when you apply tint on the back window with defroster lines.

This was a critical info. for me. I was concerned about that too. I might just go with lighter tint, no colors, or mirrors. But on the other hand, It gets HOT here, and black exterior, black leather? I don't wanna be cooked either...

Thank you VAmg

Hey VARDAR, I think your car looks good with the dark tint on it, is it messed up or dull or something? Or just too dark for your tastes? I had a Maxima I went a little too dark on the back window and it drove me crazy not being able to see at night.

I would recommend looking into ceramic tint. I have had Huper Optik ceramic on my last 2 cars and have been very happy with it. It's not cheap, but looks incredibly classy and blocks a ton of heat and UV. The manufacturer claims the protection level is equivalent to the next darker shade of metallic or dye based tint. For example, the 34% protects equivalent to ~20-22% metallic.

An interesting side benefit is it supposedly does not interfere with RF or cellular transmission, which can be important if you listen to the radio with the C43's glass mounted antenna.

Another interesting benefit I've noticed is I have not observed any scratches from raising and lowering the windows. The tint that was on the car when I bought it had significant scratches, and against my better judgement, I did not install any protection for the new tint. That I have not yet seen any scratches is especially surprising given the significant weight and thickness of the Huper Optik film.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that Mercedes was involved in the development of this film. This might have been hearsay though. Anyhow, I will continue to install this on every car I own until something better comes along.

Regards,

e harmon

And yet another thing to consider - which may sound odd - is visibility out the rear with respect to the neighborhood. My Vette was a very dark rear tint. So dark that I could barely see out of it after dusk As a result I almost backed over the next door kids one evening. None of my current cars are quite this dark as a result of that incident.

solar guard only,,,, best tint ive ever worked with, color and quality. mirror tint tends to me more of a cheaper film, i notice its alot thicker than my solar guard stuff, i refuse to do mirror tint, and i can remove 2 front doors in 20 mins both sides, but the nagain ive done about 400 strips and about 5000 tints... so im fine tuned haha ive herd of the steam way used, apparently its pretty decent, and Varda $300 is a good price, but remember what i said before it ins tabout price, its about quality in relation to the price, ask to see some of the tinters work, ask if they remove door pannels, ask if the remove ur windows ( i do not, taking windows out is old school tinting, ) some cars i have no choice tho,, but anyway make sure he has decent work and the price is somewhat the same what id quote u over the phone too. so ur ok there, just make sure hes good, i sigjest removing the front tint and redoing it in 35% and see what u think, u never wanna take ur car to a hack tinter,,, they can **** ur car up so bad, people who dont know how to remove tint properly mess up defrost lines, and cut rubber, and bend and warp weatherstrip. it can get scary, just make sure ur comfortable with the tinter and their work! and its all good!

To be honest with you, I kinda like the way it looks. I was told that it is illegal where i live (South GA). I took it to a tinter yesterday, hesaid these were %8 or %10. Georgia limit is %32. So, no matter what I have to pay aboput $300 to get the old ones off. I need an advice on what kind to put on next. Cause the car is black. And eithet you or someone said it might look like a Hotwheel car, and I agree. I guess i might just go with lighter shade of what I have.

Another problem was I can't see my back at night if i am pulling out of my driveway. And this is definetely a safety issue.
