Don't have a Mercedes right now...
Check this thread out. Your problem sounds familiar with this. I believe that the C43 engine is the same as E430 with some AMG mods for extra 30hp.

It does sound like the Crank Position Sensor - it runs about $50 from www.autohausaz.com - I pre-emptively changed it with my plugs.

Thanks for reminding me - I must put a new one in latest c43. It went pop on my old one. Only time the car ever let me down.

My local tech says the problem is endemic across all the Merc range.

You'll need an e-torx, if I remember correctly. Tight fit but not terribly difficult.

I do not know if it will refer properly via this -----> LINK, you can simply plug in your info at drivewire via their website www.drivewire.com the Crank Position Sensor is called a "Reference Sensor" - they are about $68 (FREE SHIP IF OVER $50)

Hate to dig up and old thread, but mine stalled on me today while taking the kids to tennis lessons (they'd better get good enough to support me!). It started up again in 5 minutes. I returned home and detailed it and now it's stuck halfway in the garage because it won't start. Sounds like anothe CPS gone bad.
Any general guidelines for replacing this little guy? I'm quite handy and have plenty of tools, but I don't even know where under the hood to look for this thing.
Thanks in advance!

Cps

It's on the left-hand (driver's) side, look in the area of the bell housing, aka flywheel housing...it's a tight fit but my hands are not that big. You'll need a long 1/4" extension or two along with a universal joint, I can't remember if I used an e-torx or regular torx bit.

Thanks bro. Was able to pull it out easily. Well... a few knuckle scrapes, but what else is new?
It seems to be pointless to test this, so I went ahead and ordered a replacement. Does anyone know if there's something more reliable than the OEM? Perhaps some sharp EE has fixed this for us and is making a small fortune on e-bay

I pre-emptively replaced and will probably buy another just to have one on hand. Seems they just go....much like those pesky Mass air Flow sensors

FWIW my 1999 C43 has 71K miles on it. First symptom appeared within the last two months/500 miles.

Just an update; the crank sensor failed about a month after I wrote this. Managed to get it re-started eventually and drove it down to the garage to get it replaced.

The following month I had the MAF replaced as it was on its way out. I found this out while the car was back in the garage (taken in on on a low-loader this time....) as the relay controlling the starter motor and immobiler went pop.

On friday my ABS light came on - the brake light switch had failed. Took it down to BSG Mercedes who found the problem pretty pronto and fixed it (they keep loads of these swithces in stock as they fail all the time....).

I was very happy as I had tickets for Goodwood Festival of Speed for Satueday. On the Merc stand I saw the original AMG SEL 6.9 as built and raced in 1972 (Ithink...) plus a C55 safety car from the DTM race series. Also the new E63. On the track Mikka Hakininnen was demo-ing his CLK DTM machine. Loads of interesting kit including SIX Muiras in one place.

I was a year out "1971;The first major sporting triumph for AMG: the AMG Mercedes 300 SEL 6.9 driven by Hans Heyer and Clemens Schickendanz records a surprise win in its class at the Spa 24 Hours and finishes second overall."

My C36 Amg

Hi everyone i need some help i bought my c36 6 months ago it has been going like a trooper. Up until last week that is, it was particularly hot that day and the car felt like it was loosing power then all of a sudden the engine died but did not stall it would only reach 1500 rpm.I guessed at the air flow meter i had a guy come out with diagnostics and the code came back co pot adjustment resistor. Phoned mercedes they would not tell me if it was or was not the air flow meter can anyone help. Has anyone had similiar problems the car sounds like it is running on five cylinders. Any ideas much apreciated
