95, 96, or 97 C36 AMG

Should I purchase a 95, 96, or 97 C36 AMG. I have heard that there were more problems with the 95 since it was the first year the car came out.

97. Why? More hp and a smaller, thicker steering wheel, 5 speed auto vs. a 4 speed of the 95-96 era, child occupant passenger side airbag defeat to name a few reasons.

97. After looking into these, that is what I am after. Mainly b/c of the 5th gear and 8 more hp. Can't find any C43's here in CO. And the one 97 C36 is at a dealership who is asking too much. That is why he has had it for 4+ months now.

We have quite a few here in northern California. I'd be happy to provide some "remote hands and eyes" if you see one in my area that piques your interest. I could snap some pics and check it out in detail. I'm pretty Benz savvy and could give you an honest assessment. This isn't a professional service, so no guarantees but I've helped others in this way before.

Since theses were limited production cars with the newest example being nine years old....the best condition C36 in the color you desire, would be the most important factor. The 97 gets the 5 speed transmission along with the problems associated with these "maintenance fee" transmissions. I have a 96 and like the updated dash vs. the 95 and get some comfort in knowing that the 4 speed transmission is solid and can take whatever I can throw it's way.

I'll second mbsickness. 95's have the wiring harness issues, and 97's have the problematic electronic 5-speed. The 96's seem to have the least issues.

Disclaimer: I own a 96.

is the 97 5-speed the same as the C43? Closest C43 to me is 300 miles away and the has 64k miles and asking $20k, while There is a 97 C36 with 80,000 miles they asking for $17k for. Was wondering if it is the same tranny that has the hesitation below 10 mph all the car mags say.
