Opening your trunk with no battery charge

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Howdy Folks,

I'm new to the MB world after having owned a gaggle of water cooled Porsches (928,968,944) but I gotta say I LOVE LOVE LOVE my 1999 C280. Did I say I LOVE my C280?

Recently, I had to leave it sitting at the airport for a month and that goliath of a battery completely discharged (my fault, it was the way I installed my XM Radio). Low and behold, I could not open the truck with the remote or the metal key in the key fob. Here's how I manged to get into the trunk, remove the battery, have it charged then replace it.

1) Went to AutoZone and got a pair of wires (about 4ft long) with alligator clips on each end.

2) I opened the driver's car door with the key (installed in the fob), then opened the hood.

3) Clipped the Negative (BLACK) alligator clip to a ground on the driver's fender. There's one forward of the fuse block with alot of brown wires tied together (remember in Germany Brown is NEGATIVE).

4) Clipped the other end of the Negative wire to any 12 volt source (new battery, car next to you, whatever) ON THE NEGATIVE (BLACK '-' side).

6) Opened the little covered black box on the driver's side fender just forward of the fuse block. It covers two BIG wires going to it from the Battery to the fuse block that are connected together by what looks like a fusable link.

7) Clipped the POSITIVE (RED) alligator clip to either terminal and the other side to the POSITIVE wire of the 12 volt source.

At this point, the eletrical system is energized. DO NOT START THE CAR! You don't want to pull that many amps through the electrical system at that connector!!! Let's not FRY SOMETHING EXPENSIVE!

Just use your remote or the switch in the car to open the trunk then disconnect the gator clips from the connectors on the fender.

Jump start the car from the rear or replace the battery. Either is very easy to do.

Good Luck! Your Milage May Vary!
