Weight c36 vs c43
If you can afford it get a 97. It has better gearing to begin with.
All you need to throw in is an LSD, then start working on the engine mod.
As I said before the 5 speed electronic issue doesn't just plague C36. I've seen the tranmission failed from real-life feedback and from various forumson C280(s), CLK 430, CLK55, E55 (W210) early model, and C43 as well. On the later model 5 speed tranmission, they seems to have upgraded part.
The local dealer which I usually do the service with when I still had my C36, had replaced the transmission on 2 C43(s). And according to my service advisor, they only replace 1 tranmission on C36 (mine). Given these car are rare... the chances these dealers servicing C36 and C43 is very slim to begin with.
Now looking from my perspective, I would say the C43 5 speed electronic transmission more problematic than 97 C36. But thats wouldn't be 100% correct would it ?
I am not trying to influence you to buy a 97 , but I just though I'd give my perspective on the whole transmission issue

Unless something was wrong with your E55, it aint gonna happen. If you turbocharge it ,it will possibly make it faster than a W210 E55. No way would I go from a W210 E55 to a C36 unless turbocharging was my goal IMOP..

hehe, you don't know what mods I'm doing
. Trust me its entirely possible on stock internals.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
While I was there, I was curious and weighed the car. I remembered this discussion and thought I'd post the results.
1999 C43 AMG, half tank of fuel: 3,250 Lbs.
What was removed: Spare, Jack, Trunk Carpet, Floor Mats Front and Rear
You gotta figure that the stuff which was removed may have equaled about 50 lbs in total.
