so 96 will be alot less headache basically huh? C36 is just a really cool platform thats why I want it, it really is the forgotten AMG, infact I am trying to revive it ( www.c36-amg.com ) . I think the car had tremendous potential but nobody really gave a damn about it b/c it was before the whole dot-com bubble and etc. with the right mods I don't see why it can't be as fast as my W210 E55 AMG. we'll see what happens

I am not sure why you prefer the 96.
If you can afford it get a 97. It has better gearing to begin with.
All you need to throw in is an LSD, then start working on the engine mod.

As I said before the 5 speed electronic issue doesn't just plague C36. I've seen the tranmission failed from real-life feedback and from various forumson C280(s), CLK 430, CLK55, E55 (W210) early model, and C43 as well. On the later model 5 speed tranmission, they seems to have upgraded part.

The local dealer which I usually do the service with when I still had my C36, had replaced the transmission on 2 C43(s). And according to my service advisor, they only replace 1 tranmission on C36 (mine). Given these car are rare... the chances these dealers servicing C36 and C43 is very slim to begin with.

Now looking from my perspective, I would say the C43 5 speed electronic transmission more problematic than 97 C36. But thats wouldn't be 100% correct would it ?

I am not trying to influence you to buy a 97 , but I just though I'd give my perspective on the whole transmission issue

Regardz,

J Irwan

Unless something was wrong with your E55, it aint gonna happen. If you turbocharge it ,it will possibly make it faster than a W210 E55. No way would I go from a W210 E55 to a C36 unless turbocharging was my goal IMOP..

I was up racing at the SCCA National Tour at Devens, Mass. this weekend. I had my C43 AMG with me, but wasn't racing that.

While I was there, I was curious and weighed the car. I remembered this discussion and thought I'd post the results.

1999 C43 AMG, half tank of fuel: 3,250 Lbs.

No, I'm debating about setting this car up to run in events, so I took all that out. As though the car would be running on course.

What was removed: Spare, Jack, Trunk Carpet, Floor Mats Front and Rear

You gotta figure that the stuff which was removed may have equaled about 50 lbs in total.

MB spare tire & jack & tools always equals exactly 50lbs that way its much easier for them to calculate weight base (when it has the 17" black spare, if its full size spare could be slightly more).

Lowering

The spring pads are not there to lower the car. They are there to compensate for ride height differences between spring sets. To lower your C43 properly, get ROW spings and shocks. CEC used to carry them and may still be able to get them. They aren't expensive, about $1,000 for all for corners and rather easy to change out. Don't waste your money on aftermarket poser spring sets. You'll end up with a car that is too low, has lots of rebound, and lots of spring noise.
