the royal purple and beating a dead horse

so-

ordered rear diff. oil, tranny fluid, and oil for my C43 (as well as the necessary filters)

i've done a bunch of searching etc. etc. about how to do this stuff on my car- it seems the diff. change is as straightforward as with any car, the oil change is obviously something i can handle, but i have some questions about transmission fluid change-

i ordered the appropriate dipstick, pan gasket and filter. I also ordered some "filler neck cap" piece because it was only 90 cents and i thought i might need it- what is that thing? what hints do you have to make this go smoothly?

who else is running the royal purple stuff?

i decided that i believed the hype?

what decided it for me was all the people using the newer version of the mb fluid in the older trannies- and happily.

I was in the sam perdicament about two months ago. I bought all of the stuff to change my transmission fluid myself off of autohauz. I also got a case of Royal Purple. All set to go right? Well to make a long story short I started reading on the forum about how much of a big deal the transmissions are on the C43 and I talked myself out of doing it. Luckily the dealer where I live used all of my aftermarket parts and the Royal Purple, grudgingly. I must say that the RP is treating me just fine, I actually think that the car shifts better than before. The dealer did the work for me for about $100.

I am all about some DIY but this seemed a little to risky for me to do myself but more power to you. Staplegun has some very informative posts about this topic.

Good Luck

its totally fine,

I run royal purple in every car i've bought including mercedes, not a single other oil on the market comes even close to RP in quality & performance. Mobil1 has dropped off drastically in the last decade in quality so I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

redline ATF is certified by mercedes as well for trannies but only b/c they paid $$$, its a game of dollars not quality. I'd trust RP tranny oil any day over the stuff you get from the dealership.

I tried it in my old S320 by the way... it was phenomenal, it changed shift points, was far easier to down shift & upshift and even make shifts quicker & faster. Basically it made the drivetrain much more agile and sporty.

If you are that paranoid about the tranny just do the engine & differential, those two alone will help out a bunch.

very happy thus far

could not drain tq converter so will do tranny again in another 10k miles or so (maybe even every 10k from now on which would be like every year maybe?) to get it all out of there.

None of my stock (100k) fluids looked remotely dirty either and there was absolutely no metal shavings or anything anywhere.

car seems to shift better imo

excellent, congrats, ya it shifts smoother and quicker when I did it in my tranny, and it lasts much longer supposedly.

What trans?

722.6 Rp, is Not mb spec and I wish you well.
Redline atf not approved in the 722.6 transmission it is fine in the 722.4 that takes dex3.
You really need to be careful where you seek advice, the member above that swears on the RP bible or says redline is fine is talking about his experience with the old 4 speed transmission it took old school fluid.
your 722.6 will suffer from it's use,his won't.
722.6 trans fluid change on
www.mercedesshop.com
ohlord
I sincerely hope you did not put RP in your engine
or are you that much of a gambler
btw you can use the 722.9 fluid in the 722.6 trans you can't use the 722.6 fluid in the 722.9 trans and you most assuredly can never use the 722.6 nor the 722.9 fluid in the doctors c36 4speed trans.Never use RP dex 3 clone in any 722.6 and up trans.

I think I remember finding a post on club202 where they showed the torque converter drain. It was probably on top when you were draining the tranny so you couldn't see it. If you have a good tech conection with a wynne(spelling?) machine you can get the tranny flushed and filled 1 for 1. I haven't found one yet so I did as you did but drained the tranny and converter. I'd like to get it flushed next time.

id suggest not running RP. We experimented with a friend's 280 for a few months running that with 0w40, and when it was time for an oil change that stuff came out like water, after what, 8000 miles?

I am using amsoil 5-40 european formula in my C36 and am happy. Have been using it in my e30 BMW and it loves it as well. I change it twice a year though even though they say once a year or 25,000 miles.

What's wrong with just using the recommended Mobil 1 0/40?

Expensive, and usually hard to find when it is cheap. MSRP on these things is usually $8.00 per quart (in the US of course); lowest ive seen "retail" was walmart, $6.29 a quart. But 0w40 is extremely rare in walmart. Costco and Sams club NEVER carry 0w40.

But we all knew that maintenance wouldn't be cheap when we bought a benz, right?

Oil is cheap, engines are not!

Surprising though that the Mobil 1 stuff isn't too easy to find for you. I'm not sure if my local WalMarts or Costco have it, but I can find it easily at Canadian Tire or PartSource (two large Canadian chains). I even found it at a smaller town's Canadian Tire (I was on a road trip and the oil light came on). We pay about C$10 per litre. The last time there was a sale, I stocked up on enough oil for two oil changes. You gotta do whatcha gotta do, right?

However, the one Mobil 1 product I have NEVER been able to find is their synthetic gear oil. I have literally looked all over my home town, other cities, plus various auto parts shops in the US when I've been visiting, and no luck at all.

I find Mobil 1 in my hardware store, around CHF 100.- for 5 gallons.

Hey, thanks for that tip. I'm going to be heading down to Washington state in January for some cross border shopping, so I'll check out one of their locations then. I managed to find an Autozone in Burlington, on my way to the outlet mall we frequent, so I'll try and snag some then!

Amsoil is the best out there that's why I use it. It is not cheap at around $12 a litter but from all the studies I have seen it kicks *** on everything.

Hmm I thought you said Autozone has it too? There aren't any Advance Autos in that part of Washington.
