This is the very last quote from the link that you posted Tim.
Thanks agian for the info as it will help me to decide what the right thing to do is.

'Case in point: last season our engine builder was experimenting with alternate crank pulleys on BMW engines. Like the other BMW teams (6 or so) in the series, they all elected to run these pulleys on a given race weekend. Anyway, 4 of the 6 cars went home that weekend on the trailer with broken cranks. Tell you something?'

This is not speculation, I will take it as fact but there is not enough information regarding the changes they have carried out on their crank pulleys. I am a 100% that putting a slolid pulley onto your crank could be a problem, but not a pulley that has dampening qualities

Look AMS supply a light weight crank pulley for your car. If thats what you want they can supply a top quality constructed part.

On his website and in his business plan he cites Newton's Second Law of Motion, but with respect to a rotating pulley he gives the wrong formula. It's obvious no calculations were done.

The pulley he sold you will add about 1/2 HP to the rear wheels when accelerating in first gear and less HP in other gears. That is a scientific fact that any high school physics student can verify. It's probably not worth risking the reliability of your engine for so little gain.
One would probably get more wheel HP gain from the electronic turbo whistle gadgets sold on Ebay for 19.99 Buy it Now

I think the best mod for a C36 owner is to buy a C43 or better yet a C32/55.

Enjoy the I-6 for what it is, its quick enough. Second guessing what the engineers did @ Affalterbach is swimming backwards.

Ah yes electric turbo chargers....

Funnily enough our very own omeyhomey (Dr.C36, E55 PWR, C36ickness et al) the owner of AMS, but also known as Supabimma was really taken with one of those, he seemed to think it gave 10-15HP boost - no doubt he had the dyno charts to prove it ????

dont buy those crap on ebay, the only electric one that actuall works is Eram, but even then its only 10-15HP, its not like a real turbo that does a good 60-100HP depending on turbo.
See post #3 http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...ad.php?t=46687

Seems in the intervening 6 years he hasn't learned much as the above reads much like a typical lightweight pulley thread.

PS I can't comment on the benefits of an Eram device if any, but I would suspect there's little to any substantial improvement. Not enough data to calculate increase in boost etc.

ALL GOOD. JUST A BIT MORE INFORMATION TO GO ON.

I have done a bit more research this weekend and spoke for a while to a very exsperienced mercedes technician called Matt.

The AMS harmonic balancer, if balanced (which it is) will not vibrate/resonate the crank due to the absorbing properties of the two piece construction with the rubber dampener.

The harmonic balancer weight will not effect the operation of the engine components. More mass weight on the turning engine components = performance loss.

The AMS pulley is an exact copy in shape/fitting design as the original pulleys that are used on V6 and V8 engines which range from 2.4 litre to 5.5 litre which have different power outputs and vibration frequencies, therefore these pulleys were not specifically designed for one engine and are not weighted differently for each engine size.

BUT most importantly, attached at the opposite end of the crankshaft is the torque converter, this will most likely have a weight mass 10 times the weight of the OE harmonic balancer (I don't like guessing but I know it is alot more substantial then the balancer pulley) and is also full of gearbox oil. These torque converters are also shared with different vehicle engine sizes and power outputs.

For the two above facts I doubt any major positive effects and minimal if none negative effects of reducing the weight of the harmonic balancer.

When I have too much time and money I will get my crank and torque conveter removed for lightening and balancing and I am sure if this is possible that it would improve performance,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but I don't think it is quite so easy to remove any large amount of material from a torque conveter or replace with an alluminium one,,,,,,,,as it probably wouldn't last a day after you did that!

Tim... the electric turbo does work in principle, but its not going to work if it costs 100 $s or £s. If it could create enough pressure to overcome the opposite effect that naturally happens due to combustion e.g it must produce more than an average N/A engine already sucks in under load, I reckon at least 1-2 psi to be equal and then 4-5 psi to see any positive effects.

Anything can be made to sound like it could work in principle or theory its easy, its just getting the facts to prove it thats hard.

Hey buds I just like to know to be shure about the Harmonic Balancer above here.
The question is about the aftermarket H.B., do you mean that all these H.B. fit on every Merc. with the 112/113 engine

My car is a C43 AMG I bought a new H.B. from an US webshop it was the Corteco brand, it costed me 65 US $$$, but I haven't changed it yet.
I just need to know that I got the right part for my car, if this aftermarket part fits all mercs. with the 112/113 engine family, then I guess I don't have to worry about it.
Am I correct?
Thanks

covered under service campaign ?

I don't know the model year of your C43, but check out this link:

You might be covered - I was when mine started to fail on my '00 ML430 even though it was out of warranty.

Check out page 13 where it mentions reimbursement :-)

Hi guys thanks for your input.
You know I don't live in the US, I live in europe so here there was no service bullettin on this H.B. part.
I only bought it for safety reasons to be changed by my mechanic after reading posts about it on this forum.

It's good to know that it's only one H.B. made to fit the 6 and 8 cylinder cars.
This H.B. that I bought was a Corteco brand also seen on Autohausaz.com, is it the same as genuine oem quality?
Is it better than the factory fitted part?
Is this an oem part for MB?
My car is a 1999 c43

I have not really driven it that hard yet but I can confirm:
the engines seems to rev more freely and is smooth throughout the rev range, maybe better than before.
the idle running of the engine is as smooth as always.
the pulley runs very true and is well made and has perfect rotation to the naked eye.

the original pulley was tired and the damper rubber was very hard and had slight small cracks and assume its dampening quality's were not as good as he day it went on 10yrs ago.

Cheers
