My car got louder! Very confused...

I've owned my '98 C43 for almost 3 months now and just yesterday when I started it up, it sounded noticably louder. And I mean, louder. It sounds nice, but I'm concerned because it didn't sound like this before. Every time I push the gas, it gives this deep, loud roar. Don't get me wrong, I love the sound, but I only used to get that loud sound when I mashed the pedal.. When I'm on the freeway, with the windows up, and the music turned up, I can still hear it and slightly feel it through the steering wheel. It doesen't sound like an exhaust leak or intake leak because I know what that would sound like, and it's quiet at idle with the normal low rumbling sound only a V8 would have. Please give me your opinions on this one. It's pretty strange, but again, I'm not complaining too much about the loudness. It sound really, really badass! I swear to you guys, heads turn more than ever before! I'm just wondering why it got louder. Thanks for your help, guys.

It must be something with the exhaust. Maybe the catalyst in the catalytic converter melted or something.

Any noticeable difference in your car's performance? My guess would also be the cat converter, maybe you got a hole in it?

No, there is no rattling when starting up. If it is the catalytic converter, what may have caused it to go out? If it is leaking from the flanges, what damage will this cause? Will it trigger the "check engine" light? Thanks for your help.

A catalytic converter will melt with a hot engine. Sometimes they go bad for no reason at all.

If the cat had gone out, wouldn't that have set of the "check engine" light?

Not always, the oxygen sensor may still detect everything as normal.

Had the problem

I took my car in after waking up my neighbors for a couple of months. Park Place (Bryan - my tech) found the problem.

The exhaust system had literally "vibrated" loose. It was an easy fix. Very little $$
