722.6, 5 speed standalone control.

I have had some interest in this from others. I wanted to be clear about what it is and is not. I did a swap to the 5-speed that is in the newer cars. The 722.6 or wa580 or wa330. My computer is a standalone transmission controller from Powertrain Control Solutions. They really had not had anyone develop any tuning for this setup yet when I got started, so I have been kind of the fore runner on this. This gives the ability to not only upgrade to the 5 speed but also for running full standalone engine systems for cars that are already equipped. There is some possibility that it could be used with stock fuel injection and other systems. I have done some testing but am not 100% sure yet. What it can do is give you complete control over the transmission from shift points to shift firmness. There are many other features such as a burn out function for drag racing and dyno mode, etc.
The tuning aspect is very difficult and I can make shift very smooth but there is always some circumstance which you will get a harsh shift. Mainly on the light throttle slow speeds. Not much different than Mercedes on this. They were updating the shift programs until they discontinued the transmission.

Just wanted to update people. I just ran the PCS tcu in my factory equipped car. It works beautifully. I have to dial in the tune some more but no problems have been detected yet. I am also going to get the newer CAN based tiptronic shifters to work and try newer cars also. I will let everyone know when I do.

Interesting, but please understand cracking the TCU is something many have promised but none have delivered. I understand this is a different approach, so please keep us posted on progress.

I drove my car to work and back last night on the standalone tcu. It operates the same as in my other car with full standalone engine management. I have complete control over the shift points and firmness.

sounds promising. Did you get the gear recognition to work? Any bugs left to work out?

I have not gotten the tiptronic shifter yet for testing. It is on its way though and I will let you know when I have some more info on this. PCS seems very confident that they can make it work if it does not already.

Thanks for the info and contributions to the MB community. Your efforts in tuning the PCS unit are appreciated. If you can get the CAN based tiptronic to work for the newer MBs that would be wonderful. Then I can throw away my lousy EGS and possibly go standalone to take full advantage of the car.
