C36 exhaust...

Hello everyone, I have a 1996 C36 and every once in a while I am getting a rattle which seems like it is coming from the rear muffler. Is it possible that something is lose inside like a baffle or what? If I replace the stock amg muffler with an aftermarket one, say an eisenmann sport will I gain any noticeable HP increase or is it just going to sound better? I live in B.C. and a dealer in Calgary quoted me $1675 for an eisenmann muffler... not cheap but if I get better sound and performance it may be worth it? Has anyone else done this mod?

No I haven't. Why is it that we always get gouged compared to the states? Can I expext any real HP gain by replacing the amg muffler with an eissenmann race or sport muffler? Thanks

stock muffler is already free flowing muffler on the c36, you're not going to get any significant gain by going aftermarket.
plus the stock tips are best looking ones out there for the car, not to mention sound is awesome, one of the best stock sounding exhausts i've heard.

you say you have a rattle, lift the car up and listen where exactly is it coming from, condition of the pipes, any possible holes, rust spots, condition of the hangers, move it with your hand (when cool) from side to side anything rubbing it?
i'd start there.

Thanks a lot Eurosport, I do like the look of the stock pipes...my only wish would be that it could be a little louder!

Well, I jacked it up and the whole exhaust system looks to be in good shape with no leaks and the exhaust hangers look good. The whole exhaust can be moved without rubbing or touching anything, but when I start the car, and wait a few minutes I get a rattle from inside of the muffler. I tried sucking in out with a shop vac hoping it was a small rock in there without success.

Best looking tips yes. But I wish the exhaust note is louder.

Wow just called the local Mb dealer and they want $2100 for a new amg rear muffler! That eisenmann one doesn't seem that expensive compared to the amg one!

Something is lose in your muffler and rattling around, or your cats are bad and going out. It could be so many things though, I would first suspect a hanger

it could be the cat core is falling apart and it is pushing the debris back into the muffler

Well, if it is the cats that are falling apart I think I will just get a straight pipe made and go with a new muffler from eisenmann. I do love the look of the stock tips, but I would like little more aggressive sound. I guess the only way to see if the cats are the problem is to take them off? From the outside the whole exhaust system seems to be in good shape. Thank you everyone for your advice!

oh btw before u change ur exhaust, take it to a shop and have them look. have them check the bushings/washers that keep a distance between the car/exhaust it could be one of those missing.. it happened too me, and it rattled as described. 25bucks later im good too go

Attention AMG Shoppers!! make sure the car you are looking has at least an OEM muffler (bring a mirror)..I guess the days of kicking tires are way gone

Not to implies that some MB guys are idiots with money but this happens because someone already paid this prices..sad
