Question Bad Motor Mounts? is this common?

I have a 98 c43, and it turns out it needs 2 motor mounts replaced.

Q is this common? (I have had several muscle cars, and I never had a bad motor mount)

Q: could this cause an issue with the throttle sensor?

The car will take off under hard acceleration, and then between 1st and 2nd gear, you definitely notice the motor mount issue. After the initial acceleration, it goes into some type of safety mode. the acceleration is very delayed.

Any ideas?

Very common with our cars.Get the E55 (W210) mounts for the replacements!

Sounds like your MAS could be on the way out too. Mine had hesitation problems on full throttle for a while before it threw a code. If it feels like it almost pulls stronger on partial throttle than on full throttle, that will be the MAS.

BANG-BANG

Hi, if you hear a bang when taking off, at 1-2 shift,or at kickdown
you should have changed the mounts long ago. My CLK430 mostly driven
by my son was developing a harsh sound/vibration at idle also it was
a big bang when accelerating and worried my son thinking he had a gear-
box coming apart. I tested the CLK and said we have to do the mounts
an also saying drive it carefully till we have the time to change them.

A few days later my son calls his personal mechanic ie. myself saying
the car is dead! He had driven the car from the garage a short distance
from his appartment just turning it off and when trying to start up...nothing
happens!! We had to tow the car to my place that night. The next day
trying to figure out what was wrong finally showed too obvious when I
saw the EARTH strap was apart!! It was the strap holding the engine from
tearing loose that caused the banging. The first picture is my C43 having
new mounts the one to the right is the replacement you can see it's taller.
(offcourse there was two of them)+a new gearbox mount.

The second picture is the CLK mounts+ earth cable, think it speaks for
itself? CANGE your mounts!!!!!!!! Roger

Hi,

Thanks, I have the same problem in my CLK55.

In your 1st pic, you have 3 used motor mounts showing - why is that? I thought that each engine has 2 motor mounts?

Also in your 2nd pic, you have a small part showing on the left. Is that what is called a transmission (gearbox) mount? Was that broken as well or did you just change anyway?

My ground strap broke a couple of months ago that I fixed - I had thought that it was just due to corrosion but clearly it was from the engine shifting and ripiing the strap off due to the bad engine mount(s).

the mounts have hydraulic fluid in them and they are made of rubber as well. Due to the age of our vehicles the rubber starts to break down as this is what rubber does over time and element exposure. Simple and cheap fix and will keep you from having major problems down the road. I had mine replaced recently at the stealership for cheap - I think it was $150 bucks or so - I didn't have the equip to do it so works for me. I didn't think to put E55 mounts on there though - is there a significant difference?

Bad engine mounts, they are a consumable. Very easy job, as long as you have a trolly jack and a second person you can do it yourself at home. It's actually easier on a C43 than the C240/280 (V6). Change the trnasmission mount while your at it, very cheap to replace.

As for the acceleration problem, I think a few people have got confused ovr the symptoms. Do you mean that any accelerator movement becomes very slow to respond (ie. if you give it half throttle it seem more like it's having a bit of a think about it before accellerating OR that it just doesn't have any power? If it's taking it's time reponding and restarting the engine fixes it for a while then the throttle sensor it faulty (the one where the throttle cable attaches too between the bulk heads.)
