finally happened- need a new key for the '99

I've only had 1 key since I bought the car and I've known I would eventually have to bite it and get two new ones (it's not smart to not have a spare).

Anyways, this weekend the dog chewed my key up a bit... still starts the car, but definitely time to order some new ones.

I understand I have to go through dealer, correct?

do they need the car? (that would be HUGE pita)

how much is it going to run me?

is there any way to keep cost down?

or you could spend around $80 like a bunch of us did ordering the new style key online. The dealer will tell you it won't work but it does. Use the search, it's here somewhere.

I followed that thread as well, and I believe the price went up to $150 or so and then jumped to $250. I haven't checked on it for a while.

In that case sorry I brought it up, too bad it's no longer available? Maybe RBrenton from this site can get good prices on them? I've purchased many factory MB parts from him at really good prices.

$250.00 for a for a key fob is pretty wrong and I think you guys are right about the dealer charging that.

If your key is like the one in the link below...

It's a piece of cake to swap out the innards from your old one to your new one (it's a shell) otherwise yes, you'll have to go through the dealer - I bought one on ebay a couple years back for $25 there's a few on there right now LINK
