Alternator?

Hello, so for the past couple of days i been hearing a humming noise come from the front of the engine, kind of around the water pump. Today i decided to stop in a my mechanic to have him take a look at it and he said its the alternator. Has this happened to anyone, and anyone have any idea how much this could cost me? Any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you!!

Sounds like the bearing is going south. If you can R&R the alternator yourself, it can be rebuilt for under $100. Just find a starter/alternator rebuilder in the yellow pages. My local guy charges $75. If your alternator is like mine, it has an external voltage regulator. You may want to make sure that gets changed too (on an MB, it may not come in the kit). Insructions are on this link.

If a mechanic has to do this, he's going to charge you a couple of hours labor and the cost of a rebuilt alternator. List for a rebuilt is $600+. Autohaus AZ charges under $300 with a $100 core charge. Don't even dream about new. List price on my CLK alternator is $1050.

.. . . . . . . right about now I think the electrical repair section of the phone book is kind of popular at your place . . . . . .

Interesting..

My wife's 99 C43 with 54K miles started "whining" ( the alternator, not my wife ) about two weeks ago...
Picked up a new aftermarket alternator on EBAY for under $200.00 with no core charge...

On my car, the regulator is part number 003154510664 and has a retail price of $64 at the MB dealer. Autohaus AZ has mine for under $25, BUT it's best to get the voltage regulator part number from your car and call in the order. That way you can ensure you’re getting the right part.

Assuming you have a Bosch alternator, there's a good chance your voltage regulator may be a 0021549206, but that's just a guess. Those retail for $92 at the dealer. If your mechanic is going to do the work, he can get you a regulator much cheaper than a dealer. For example, that 0021549206 voltage regulator has an alternate part number of 1197311242, and those are available for $28 at parts houses. It's the EXACT SAME part made by Bosch. You must get the part number from your alternator though. Using my guesses may result in you waisting $30 on the wrong part.

New with one year warranty and same as most of the available aftermarket units...
Seller has top feedback and is easy to deal with...comes complete with pulley and internal regulator...bolts right in, just pay labor for the removal and installation...any indie shop can do it less then a dealer. Suggest changing your belt at the same tim

Anyone got direction or some DIY tips on replacement? About to jump in myself and thought i'd ask for advice first.

Edit: never mind. Super easy DIY. Tip: take it out the back and bottom. Really easy drop out.
