It is weird because this happens on both my W202's ONLY if I don't use the auto AC mode. Otherwise, the figures remain visible at all times

If the DIY doesn't work, I have a spare unit that won't fit my C36 because it's the newer, 1996+ unit. So I'd let it go for 20 or 30 bucks.

Thanks Jason, I'll try the DIY if it gets worse, but for the moment I have plenty of things to do: change rotors and pads front and rear, brake flush and bleed, oil filter and oil change, cabin air filter, plugs, wires, change valve cover gaskets. Transmission flush will be done by the dealer

mine is fuuking up all the time, getting pissed off everytime I see the digits fade.
gently tap the display everything is back.
a low quality part from MB that's what it is!
still expensive after more than 10 years out of production!

You write up saved me a bundle. I had exactly the same problem as you. I just got home with my keys which I bought at the local MB dealership, less than $10 including tax. I followed your procedure and it worked great. It was the same as yours even down to the fact that the button presses where crisper and more "click like" when I finished. Once again, thanks.

its the major problem which occured in many cars.. many times due to breakage in their wires this problem arrives which can be fixed but if lcd dysfunctions then surely you will have to change the whole kit of climate control unit

I believe it's more the same zebra wiring that was a common problem on MB LCD units. Same thing happens on some w202 clusters, and on the W210 and W208 newer style clusters. It's all the same zebra connection that loses it's contact.

If you have the same type of climate control units as on our c43's, then yes the bulb needs to be changed. Easy to do using a (thick) valve feeler gauge which you insert one at a time in the small slit on the bottom at each end of the unit. This unlatches the unit at each end. Remove unit, unplug and change the bulb.

BTW, it looks like the one of the previous owner installed a refurbished climate control unit.
I bet these refurbish companies are making a killing "refurbishing" (tightening screws) these.
