Hey guys! I have a question pertaining to an '02 E55 motor with 100K Kms. Which parts would be beneficial to replace before I drop it in? I'm definitely changing the plugs and my transmission oil cooler lines are brand new. Also, the water feed fitting is obviously a must. Here's a list of parts and I would like opinions pertaining to each item as whether it should be replaced or is it overkill? Thank you in advance for the input and advice.
Cylinder Head Gaskets
Valve Cover Gaskets
Upper and Lower Rad Hoses
Rear Main Seal
Tranny Seal
Tranny Cooler Lines
Oil Pan Gasket

it's good thing to replace the above parts when the engine is out of the car.
at 100k km's, maybe you should change the harmonic balancer for 100% peace of mind, check belt tensioner condition, upper pulley condition, check oil port gasket as it's tight replacing it, put a new belt, check headers gaskets, check MAF + gaskets, check waterpump for leaks, replace thermostat.
there shouldn't be any rattle from timing chain at 100k km's

sure thing bro, no prob.
it's easier to replace parts on your engine out of the car.
good luck with your project
don't fogget take many pictures when you remove the old engine, updating your new engine, and finally installing new engine into your car
btw
do tranny cooler lines rust a lot and eventually break from tranny connectors?
when you replace cylinder head gasket, you have to remove heads to access both gaskets.
i've never heard this gasket will cause any leaks?
do you have an engine stand so you can work in good standing position?
cheers

Hey Kowalski, thanks for the advice! My transmission lines appear fine with no visible rust. I suppose corrosion would vary depending whether one drives their car through heavy winters. I'd imagine the road salt and sand would definitely affect the condition of the tranny lines over time. My trannny oil cooler lines and oil cooler are brand new. I had to get the lines from a Canadian MB dealer as they were no longer available online or in the USA. Long discontinued part. I ended up purchasing the very last set that was in Toronto at the main MB warehouse. I'm in the process of purchasing an engine stand in order to work on it.
Is there any other parts from the E55 engine bay that I may want to get while they are still available?
Cheers

i guess that's it the above mentioned parts.
if, you have put new parts on your c43 engine and they are not worn you can lift them over to your new engine, you'll save a buck not having to buy the same part twice for e55 engine.
have fun playing

Good idea doing a refresh while its out!
Don't bother with head gaskets this is far too much work and they don't seem to ever fail under normal use!.
The HB is different on 5.4 from 4.3,but most other parts are same.
Make sure you follow the MB spec sealant bead and paths for the sump otherwise it will leak, or worse clog your oil pickup if you think more is better. I've found best tool by far is MB corking gun and there recommended sealant.
Maybe do the oil cooler seals as these tend to go hard and leak, however they are really expensive.

Just delivered today. Here she is...an '02 E55 5.4 with a mere 100K Kms and 100% complete for $2K CAD. I couldn't be happier with my purchase and will begin replacing all necessary gaskets, seals, etc. I will be sure to log the entire process with frequent updates and pics.
I'm curious as to what other members use and recommend for cleaning the exterior of the engine. I have much detailing experience but I'd like to try something different other than the typical engine shampoo/degreaser. Thx

Much fun, Zayed! I can't wait to finish this project. I haven't found a definitive answer regarding the C43 transmission. Is it strong enough to withstand the added torque that the 5.4 adds? What is the final gear ratio of the E55 rear as opposed to the 3.07 in the C43? Thx

congrats on your purchase and delivery.
you must be a proud father now?
as long as you don't abuse the transmission while the ATF oil is cold, there shouldn't be any problems with tranny holding engine torque, people here still use their stock trannys with the new 5.4 engine.
when AMG did the c55 version they changed the diff for another final ratio, this mod requiered a floorpan modification, i don't think you want to cut and beat panels on your undercarriage to swap diff housing.
dang bro, ship dat engine to me pronto, i want it so bad!

E55 using 2.82, you have to keep stock 3.07, it will work well, i'm using it with 5.4l since 4 years,
if you want to use E55 2.82, you have to bring a donor CLK55, to swap everything, ECU/TCU/cluster/tip. shifter/all main wiring/diff./shaft..!!

Thanks for the info Kowalski. I really appreciate it. I'm definitely a proud father! To be honest, the motor swap was not in the plans. I started reading the E55 conversion thread and started searching for a motor about six weeks ago but the prices were too high for the amount of mileage that they had. There is one on eBay with 34K miles for $3500 USD plus $425 shipping. At that price, I'm not surprised that it hasn't sold. Shipping to your location must be very costly!

+1, stick with C43 tranny, it has the same out-put with 5.4l,

everything is high mileage and probably heavily worn.
i'm stuck with my 944 engine

wrecking yard near me has 2 5.4 engines, but they appear to be from models that aren't a fit?
2000 ML55AMG and 2000 S55 AMG according to their site. I assume these would fit fine, except for oil pan, right?
