1996 C36 Autocross Project
Closing on the completion of my C36 as a resto\tuning project.
Previously I had gotten all the major bullsxxt out of the way like:
http://www.cartct.com/10-10-10.shtml
Not to mention that after I took instruction from a friend on the fun-runs, I managed a 57.296s with him in the car. Shaving off impressive 7/10s. No cones.
Summary of the cars (and drivers obviously) that were done today:
Some pictures: http://www.cartct.com/10-10-10p.shtml
Nice seeing you Ben (appatula)! Hope things work out with your car. Drove Ben's car today and realized how precise the steering on these cars is supposed to be. Tight and nimble. I have to find the point of failure and slack in my system.
Next project: shutting a C43 owner in a straight line? They just won't stop running their mouth about that all. Anyone from the tri-state want to meet up? Mass, RI?
Previously I had gotten all the major bullsxxt out of the way like:
- multi wiring problems
- suspension rattles
- rear camber
- intake heatsoaking baffle
- 190E Cosworth 3.27:1 LSD (I love you money-one!)
- +1 AMG wheel fitment with 245/35R18's on all 4 corners

Thanks Denis! I'll have to add some of the clips I took, the C looked really beastly out there and I must admit the sound when you get on it is just NICE. The combination of the exhaust and intake growl made people look. Also, I have to give you props on your driving skills, considering your a heavy four door pulling numbers close to new GT3's and vettes, murdered that E36 M3's time, with a person in the car........really respectable bro! Keep at it man, I'm going to need a teacher soon
I'd personally love to see a C43 run against a 36. Put all the trash talking to rest, we'll document it.

This reminds me of someone who used to post here (maybe still does?) who would argue immediately that the c36 is an inferior auto-cross/road race car compared to the c43 lol...

It's a shame, really.
The 5G-tronic mated M104 engines from 1997 bring a heavier car to the same 1/4m time and within 0.1s of the 0-60s time. According to all the major reviewer magazines anyhow. Supposedly, Mercedes of NA also.
So, if any local C43 still has the audacity, please let me know. Loser buys everyone dinner.
EDIT: While I do have a baseline 3-axis accelerometer, I think to make this really interesting we should organize a day trip to the New England Dragway: http://newenglanddragway.com/home/index.php
- The car is 100 lbs lighter
- has less weight on the front axle
- makes 30+ horsepower more
- develops torque EARLIER
- has a better geared transmission
- 0.2s in a 0-60mph test
- 0.2s in a 1/4m test

Why do you wana take on a c43 so bad??
If you have the 4 speed, chances are you will still be in the review mirror of a c43 driver.
I raced a 500e which has more power\torque then both mine and your car but I still pulled on him due to one more gear.
97 c36s with 5 speed and bumped up power are a different story, they are a hair slower then the c43s but lack smoothness in pedal response
Nice project you got going tho. I wanted to do that to my car but since its a pretty rare car, I don't wanna ruin it

From what I know the 96 model has a 4speed?? If thats the case, you have absolutely no chance, even with your mods. Sorry its just facts. C36 is a great car and im planing to pick one up to go together with my c43 in the future

This is exactly why I need one of you to race me. I simply don't buy that. You raced one W202.104 and now its 'facts'?
Do we have any local C43s? Anyone? Come on... I need this. My car has 144K on it, I don't care if yours has 10K or 100K, I just want to do this.

I ran neck to neck with my friends c36 and i sligtly started pulling around 110 id say. We ran from a 70mph roll. Cars are pretty close but like I said, one extra gear does wonders and I really love seeing 202s get turned into track cars. I dunno how you misunderstood my post

We just really want to get a few 43's together and go at it with our 36's in a "scientific" manner, with documentation (vids, times, ect) rather than relying on a couple highway "one time pull" stories. 43 guys tend to be pretty defensive about this subject so it would be nice to get some hard "real world" evidence that everyone can benefit from rather than argue about.

and so it begins once again. can a mod change thread title to the oh so cliche'd 36 v 43?
someone bring a c36 to socal and i'll run them. but id honestly get more kicks taking on e30/e36/e46 m3's, they're the true rivals, not other benzes...
I enjoy friendly rivalry as well between mbz owners and all, but please don't generalize c43 owners in a black and white logical fallacy. who are "they"? a certain few, or do you really mean all c43 owners? ?_?

Numerous guys. There are a-holes on either end. There are a lot of straight six butthurt guys just like there are many V8 owners who have even run a C36 in a straight, but they won't mind joining in on a discussion and tell you all day that the c43 is faster. Why? Because they've read about on the internet.
Obviously my car isn't stock. But that just means I honestly think I'm faster than a C43 now. If I am not, I will run one, lose to one and buy the owner dinner. Very simple. No bullsxxt.
Ultimately I just want to see if I have any true comparable gains.

Honestly, you guys are on here talking the same game with no facts to back it up. Come on down south. Its the same thing, why don't you guys make the trek. We can meet up at Rockingham in North Carolina.

It's no big deal, I didn't mean to come off aggressive or anything, just really want to do this. Excited, you know? My car has sprung back to life and I simply want to know how much more to be able to pull on a C43, assuming I will be lagging behind. I see in retrospect how my wording is all pompous and ****. I realize the guys who love running their mouth aren't anywhere close to me. I wouldn't be taking out my frustration on some random C43 owners.
I think I mentioned I am willing to take the gang to dinner
There is just too much talk.
I will find someone local. I found a few members who are from Northern NJ and I think there is a car or two in Massachusetts, too.

Good to see you got everything worked out. The diff is definitely a good thing to have picked up from Money-One. The whole diff issue has me wanting a W209 CLK55 just so I can buy an off the shelf LSD.

It was a steal. I feel like my car's worth just doubled. I don't think people realize these things... When I started talking to him and realized just how little he is asking for one of a kind differential, I couldn't believe myself.

How is your car on the freeway with the new gearing?
I'd do that if it's livable...

good to see another C36 doing autocross. I've got some new vids from last weekend I'll post soon in one of my threads.
How was the 16v diff modified to work with the C36?
