the round fuel filter you wanna replace is in front of the rear axle on right passengers side below the backseat.
It's covered by a plastic cover for protection I think.

I did this (and the pump) last winter. It's on the passenger side, near the rear as Kowalski described. You need to remove the plastic cover to get at it, but it's not too difficult. I removed the rear wheel to improve access to the area too.

Technically they have the same interval as a bog stock c180 which has the same filter. I know which vehicle will see more fuel though it. They are cheap enough that if it's a regular driver I'd do it every 2-3 yrs, 4 is ok if you don't drive much.

I might need that replaced.

What are the symptoms of a mad fuel filters??? Would it cause power loss or bad fuel mileage?

another question-do you have to replace both pump/filter at the same time?

No need to

do the pump filter is separate.
Biggest detriment to best fuel mileage at models this age and miles is neglecting to replace the o2 sensors all 4
they are due at 100k miles and can when old and worn out cut performance and mpg by 15%.

If the fuel filter is clogged up enough to restrict flow you will start to feel stuttering at wide open throttle. It'll start as something subtle and steadily get worse.

Can you get to the filter by taking out the back seat and opening the plastic cover, or do you have to get to it from the underside?

you have to lift the car on a hoist and work underneath it, it will be easier for you.
You won't have a crooked back when you're finished.

Is it in the same location for a C36 as well? And is the removal process pretty straight-forward? Do you have to disconnect any hoses/gas spillage, etc.?

Haven't really had a chance yet to look under the car, but where are the jack points? Any in the front/middle of the car, i.e. cross member? or only along the sides?

before removing anything you need to put some clamps on the fuel hoses so when you remove the hose from the fuelfilter endings it will prevent from massive gasoline leak.
Maybe if you don't have too much gas in your tank it might help avoiding fuel pressure leak before removing the fuelfilter,

I believe your fuel filter is located on the same place close to your frontside rear axle.
