Summer tyres

So I have the yokohama advan neovas, great summer tyres with lots of grip, but it is now winter. Down in NC, this usually doesn't mean much other than a little less grip from the tyres being a little colder and harder, but we've been getting some snow lately and really cold 13 degree lows. My question is, apart from the terrible grip and slightly added wear coming from slipping more and the tyres not being heated up properly, am I doing any extra damage to the tyres? Is there some thing with summer tyres where the cold and snow will f them up for good and I won't be able to use them for next spring/summer? Or does the grip just diminish?

I would imagine that the cold will not damage your summer tyres, contrary with winter tyres and heat Also, considering the amount of wear a C43 or C36 generates on tyres and the rears, I don't think you are going to keep them much longer that 12 months at a time So, I wouldn't worry too much

Haha very true

Plus i figure that at least when the roads are dry I heat up the tyres enough anyway. lol. That and with the number of AutoXs I do, super quick tyre wear should just be a fact of life

eclectic assortment of cars
I try not to drive with any summer rubber below 5*C or so. I don't think that the compounds aren designed to operate in that temperature range. And where I live, if it's down to 5* or so, there's a chance of snow. Snow + summer tires = toast.

what will your insurance company say if you toast your car with summer reifen?
you hit somebody else with your car and you are using summer reifen, who's to blame?
I bet the insurance company will blame you for the axxident and will diminish your repairbills, depending on what kind 0f insurance policies there are in your country?
any possibility to loose your license or getting hefty fines if you are to blame causing an axxident with summer reifen?
don't take the risk and driving with the wrong tyres depending what season it is!
if you can, keep your car stored during winter, you'll prevent for future rustbucket status on your car

Good stuff Tasho. That's amazing your tyres lasted 4 years!! Do you drive???

Mine honestly last about a year each, and it's not even the rears that get warn the worst, it's the damn corners of all of them.

As far as insurance is concerned, I hadn't thought of that. I'm not sure if they could pull that though, especially in NC. I don't see how an insurance company could mandate you to spend an extra $600-1000 on winter tyres, especially in a state where it snows about once a year, though insurance companies do do rediculous things it seems.... I'm not worried about the traction/my driving portion though, I was just worried about any extra wear or deformities coming from the temperature drop, because like drbc43 had mentioned, I had heard that winter tyres in the summer will die.

If only I had the luxery to store the benz in the winter. Alas it must sit in my drive way all winter because I don't have a garage, or a second means of transportation. But then again, our January lows are only 15, and the roads are rarely salted/sanded, so I think I'm safe

I have summer tires on the back - I have them siped - 12 bucks a tire to do it - I get around fine in the snow in the 'W' mode and they handle like crazy when it's warm out. I've found that the outside edges were faster on these cars - have to keep an eye on the toe adjustment when aligning - it seems to be a bit finicky.

I'm Using the TOYO R888 All year round, in the dry they are beyond amazing, faster than any high performance summer tire. in the wet they will stunn you with the grip they have, just have to watch out for standing water if your speeding, so far i have no issues with them. I just installed a new set since the old one was worn at the rears till they were total slicks, and yet they still had good grip on damp roads.

But i can't just tell you go buy a set and try it, they r still riskier than full tread tires in the winter as you can get caught by a puddle when speeding, if you know what i mean.

I have TOYO PROXES 4's UHP all season tire and LOVE THEM!!! The grip is UNREAL I can barely do a burn out before they catch and the traction in the wet is the best I have had so far (keep in mind I live in Oregon where it rains 8 months out of the year). They are pretty quiet and don't tramline like my FALKEN 452's which I wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy. Only down side is they are kinda spendy...
