Had a potential buyer who test drove a previous E55 of mine in Ohio who claimed to have a black/black 2000 C55 w/ ~60k miles. Saw pictures on his phone briefly...never saw it in person as he passed on my E55. I can try to dig up the contact and put you in touch?
The way he spoke about it at that time, he didn't sound like he was interested in selling, but he had several other MBs/AMGs and i'd expect him to at least have a conversation about the car...
This is all assuming that he wasn't stretching the truth about it being an C55...

A TRUE W202 C55 was an option offered by AMG's manufaktur division (special division of AMG that does custom work to customers cars). For a mere €30,000 you could have your C43 transformed into a TRUE W202 C55. They received upgraded transmission parts (fixed the needle bearing issue), upgraded rear differential (from the CLK55 I believe), floor pan clearance modifications for the new diff, tuning, and upgraded M.E. programing (to support the new 5.4L motor). So there is more to a TRUE C55 than just a motor swap but I would venture to say that a swapped C43 may be a tiny bit quicker than a TRUE C55 as I would imagine they would be a little lighter (I could be wrong).
I thought I would start by determining how many W202 C55's were produced.
Below are the production numbers for the W202 C36, C43, and C55 (split up by U.S imports and world wide numbers)
US IMPORTS (note less C36's were imported to the U.S market than C43's but more C36's were produced for world wide markets)

I located a W202 C55 that was for sale in Japan a couple years ago (they were asking over $70k but again this was a couple years ago)
But I can assure you there are no W202 C55's for sale at this moment (at least not that I can find).
The hunt continues....
Here is some more info I have found on the W202 C55:
The upgrade also includes a complete new gearbox and overall transmission. The updated instrument cluster bears the AMG logo and a 300*km/h scale card.
Bloc engine (M113.983)
5.5 liter (5'439*cm³) V8 longitudinal at 90° (made from aluminum alloy)
Cylinder head, crankcase and cylinder head gasket*: taken from the 5.0 litre M113.961 engine
Crankshaft, pistons and connecting rods*: new components manufactured by AMG
Re-designed camshafts with cams specially designed for the engine
Valves seats*: taken from the engine M113.961
Transmission (722.636):
Five speed Speed shift transmission*: gearbox taken from the Mercedes-Benz W208 CLK 55
Electronic fuel injection:
New controller (Bosch HMS 7.0) with modified data settings for extra power output and optimum exhaust emissions
Exhaust system:
Except a new middle and tail silencer – the upgraded C 43 uses the same exhaust system as the original model
Rear axle general:
New rear axle centerpiece*: i=2.82 with new drive shaft
New rear axle wheel flange
New propeller shaft with 4-arm flanges – PCD=110*mm
Floor pan
The floor pan of the upgraded C 43 (under the rear seats) had to be modified in order to accommodate the larger rear axle center piece
Oh there were 7 Estates that were converted to true W202 C55's
I seen one of the estates for sale a couples years ago not sure the side the driver was sat on but it was selling for I believe $110k

TOTAL

[/ QUOTE

Hi, my first (of many I hope) posts. I have just bought a genuine w202 C55 AMG RHD and am on a journey trying to find out as much as possible on this very interesting car.
Thought I'd share what I've found out so far, which is very little as I've just started, if this thread is still active and and people are still interested.
My car was converted by AMG on July 16th 1998, as confirmed by AMG classic in Affalterbach. They won't share that how many were converted, but say it is ultra rare. I have read on this forum that Mercedes confirmed in a C63 press release in 2007 that 59 were made (I can't find this press release anywhere so if someone has a copy I'd be very grateful), however have seen elsewhere that it was only 45, and other places over 100 - either way, not many. I currently have it in a merc specialist, getting the engine and tranny numbers, for my records which i can share if anyone is interested.
I have just bought a factory w202 C55 AMG in the UK and have had it verified by AMG Classic. Very excited. it drives like a dream. Am piecing together what i can find and happy to share if this thread is still live and people are interested

Its in the shop at the moment, being serviced, recommissioned and having a few job done. This is the link to the auction where i bought it, with all the pictures. I'll post some when i get it back in a few weeks.
One thing I have found out is that there appears to be only 45 every made. I've found a book called "Mercedes Benz Personenwagen seit 1986" by Gunter Engelen, that states that only 45 were made. All the facts associated to the C55 match exactly the Mercedes public archive so look very credible. ive tried to attached the book to this message - Bottom right says "Stuckzahl 45" which translates as quantity or number 45. Ive ordered a copy of this book for myself, which i can share when i get it. I understand from this thread that 59 were made, as quoted on a c63 press release. would love to see the original release if anyone has it?
Fascinating! I know there are some folks here who are desperate to know a few secret differences between a C43 and a C55. Information has always been impossible to track down, and information from when they were being built is spotty at best.
For example, I've read that they had either an entirely different running gear (at what speeds does your car shift from 1st to 2nd? 2nd to 3rd?). I've heard the real w202 C55 has an entirely different differential, differential housing, differential cooling installed on the bottom of the unit, or a differential access point installed above it from the interior of the car (under the rear seat). No one has ever owned one and reported on any of this is true at all.
I will see what I can find out but am on the start of my journey with this car. What I know so far is that they were built from July 1998 to May 2000 and that mine was made on 16th July 1998 which would make it one of the first, or even the first. AMG classic won't formally confirm this unfortunately but have in 2005.
With regard to the gearing, I believe from the build sheets I have, comparing to the C43 data on the public archive, that the gear ratios are the same, except the final drive at 2.82 on C55 compared with 3.07 for the C43. I have a data build data sheet for the C55 that was provided by AMG back in 2005. This shows the difference between a C43 to a C55, according to them. See below – AMG denoting the upgraded parts.
I believe that the car has a different transmission and differential but will know more when my specialist has looked at it more. They only started today!
Will provide more when I have had a bit of time to go through all the information I have in the paperwork. Hope that helps.

Waaaaw, awesome to have a piece of a real diamond like this original C55,
my friend got one from directly from Hamburg/Germany 3 years ago,,
From: Land of mountains, cheese, chocolate and watches
12' W204 C63 AMG coupe "T-Rex", 12' W451 Smart Fortwo Pulse (99' W202 C43 AMG + Ultima Can-Am sold)
Now that is a great find. Just wonder if the infotainment unit is period as in 98' I have doubts they existed in that format, but could be totally wrong.
Now what would be even rarer would be finding a S202 C55. Probably would need giving away a kidney
I will see what i can find out but am on the start of the journey. In terms of build dates, i know that they started in July 1998 and finished may 2000. Mine was built on 16th July 1998 so might even be the first. Unfortunately AMG classic wont confirm this.
With regards to the gearing, comparing to the data i have on my car to the C43 data on the public archive the gearing is the same with the exception of the final drive which is 2.82 on mine and 3.07 on a C43. i did a rough 0-60 when i got it and achieved 5.3 secs with a lot of wheelspinning!
I have build sheets provided by AMG in 2005 for my car which shows certain upgraded items. See below.
the AMG denotes what's been upgraded over a C43 apparently. I believe that the diff and transmission are different (my garage are looking to confirm) and the car weighs 35kg more than a C43 according to my owners manual.. i am assuming that's the bigger engine, diff etc..
To answer the head unit is not original.. its a command 2 installed in 2005 i think. I will get this replaced with an original when i have time.
hope thats answers some questions. more when i have done some more research.
if anyone can provide the C63 2007 press release id be very interested in seeing that
I think the 5.4l engine actually weighs less. Greater displacement means more Alusil was removed from the block to create that displacement. 45kg is quite a big difference for 2 cars that should be mechanically identical. Interesting.
Any 0-60 time measured with wheelspin should be ignored Get some proper tires on a dry road and try until you get a great launch. The best I've done with my 55-swapped C43 is 4.8s. But if it appears yours definitely has taller gearing, I would be very curious what impact that has on 0-60 time. With a car this light, it doesn't automatically mean it's slower.
