everyone read. 99 C43 Front of engine rattle at idle
so ive been hearing this rattle at the front of the engine at idle. no knock or ping. not lifter noise etc. thought to be plastic idler. replaced with new. didnt fix. but needed to change anyway pulley was cracked. changed to updated belt tensioner. found noise to be resonating from front of engine around air pump. well let me make it short. ran without belt..noise still there. well I found the problem to be a timing chain noise. so either timing tensioner, chain, or guides. changed timing tensioner first...still there. did the chain today..and noise is gone. so if any of you have that noise thats what it is

Amazing to hear that the chain needed to be changed...
How many miles/km do you have on the engine? Was it worn? I thought the chain lived longer than most M113 engines

should only take 2-3 hrs. but when I put it back together I had jumped one tooth and when I started it. I got immediate CEL and had cyl 5 6 7 misfire. tore it back down and had it fixed back in a hour or so. got it fixed and drove 2 hrs to my parents... ran perfect.

I'm also interested in this job. Mine has 270k miles on all the original components except for water pump and HB. I'm sure I'm missing some MPG and HP. Also maybe a valve and lifter job

I have definitely noticed a difference in gas mileage. put the new chain in and immediately drove 4hrs and adveraged 24mph doin 70ish. and a couple bursts over a 100 lol. and to do a "how to" video I don't think so. my car has been the only m113 engine to ever have a timing chain replaced. sounds crazy but any other mb tech I've asked also have never done this job bc everyone thinks there "bullet proof" and never needed it. so I'm not sure when I'd ever be able to video it again. and sorry I don't really want to take mine apart again...for free that is. but I can probably post the WIS documents if that would help... although you Will need MB special tools to do it the way i did by rolling it in..instead of taking the front cover off.

I'm super interested in this. My 99 has 298k miles and the chain has a lot of rattle to it (has since I got it at 240k miles).
Shop quoted me 1200 to do the chain (I assume that means guides, too, due to the price). But lately I'm really interested in at least trying to roll a chain on myself. I would REALLY appreciate any direction I can get.
I did the head gasket myself on my old m104 C280, but I'm a little afraid of this job since it's a hand-made AMG motor and I have no idea if the job is advisable in my own garage.
I might start a new thread and do a pictorial if I can get some help on how to do the job.
