spark plug change

spark plug change
i'm sure we discussed this in the past, but i was wondering if any of you did your own spark plug replace on your c43. when i checked it out, it looks like there is no room to get a spark plug socket in certain areas. is there a special tool for this?

hahaha man i guess i have to answer my own post. anyways, there are no special tools, they do have a spark plug wire puller but can't image how you will get that in some of the locations near the rear of the cylinder, the space is extremely tight but manageable if you take your time. i think during the entire process, trying to unplug the wires were probably the hardest. you just dont want to jank them out, carefully just work it. anyways after 16 plugs, i dont know if i would do it again myself. but i was very glad to see that my all of my old 16 plugs were burning ok.

Did you use stock plugs or something else? Did you change the wires as well? What prompted you to change 'em out in the first place?
I've got 59k on my car now, 100k seems a long way away but can you really go that long?

I replaced mine at 65,000 miles, just after I bought the car and the plugs were pretty worn out.
I replaced them with Denso Iriduim and also did the plug wires also. I used Magnecor wires.
The stock caps are almost impossible to remove and many of the stock boots get torn.

Thanks Jeff,
I just priced it out on line, $12/plug, $192 for 16, and $174 for the 8mm wires. So $366 plus shipping, lets round to $375 and then an afternoon leaning over the engine.
Not exactly what it costs me to tune up my 72 slant 6 plymouth, but what do I expect on an AMG!

I know it's not cheap but the plugs and Magnecor plug wires are of the best quality and will result in a better running engine.
And future plug changes will be easy.
But give yourself the weekend to do the swap. Do the right bank on Sat and the left bank on Sun. It's a real pain in the *** to change out the stock plugs, with the stock plug wire caps, they just will not come off. Have it in your mind to use some good curved jaw pliers to help grab the stock wire boots and that you will destroy a few in the process.

Where is a good buy to buy this Magnecor wires and Iridium plug..?
I have tried Beru ultra-X it is very good compare to Bosch.
The engine running smooth, since I have been hearing a good feedback on Iridium I'd like to give it a try

sorry for the late reply, i read somewhere on the forum that someone recommened checking their plugs on C43's cause he said that on his, one wasn't burning and it caused some internal problems later on. just from that , it prompted me to just check and then came the descision to just swap them out. i have a 1998 C43 but my car does not have a distributor to my knowledge as i was not able to get hold of any shop manuals to double check, but they have the ignitors on top of each cylinder - one ignitor for two plugs. thsi si where my spark plug wies plugged into. my wires seemed ok, when i checked the omh reading on each wire, they all gave me the same reading, usually when a wire is bad, you will get a diff reading on that wire than the rest. i used the factory Bosch plugs from the dealer because someone told me that they didn't recommend the 4 prong plainum on the c43 engine. i dont know how true this was, so just to be safe, i went with the stocks.

The prices I quoted were just off the manufactures web sites so I'm sure they can be found cheaper. I'm not ready to do this work yet, I'll save until the springtime, so I'm not gonna buy the stuff just yet.

Hey folks, been a while since i have been around these parts...
Wouldn't this send an error code?
Cuz mine sometimes seems like it is missing at full throttle, but service said that would write a code if it was happening...

i'm thinking that if your engine starts to misfire that it should send out a fault code. but again i was just quoting osmeone that stated that one should have a mechanic check out the spark plug before purchasing a used C43 cause on his, one didn't fire correctly and lead to tons of money fixing the issue.
i guess for someone just getting into buying a c43 or mercedes for that matter wouldn't know about fault codes or anything, and i'm sure that the sales man would not probably tell you either. just a safe thing to know.
