I know this is the internet where people love to over analyze things to death, but your engine will run just fine on either of those oils.

For your 63 I would personally stick with the 0w40, but like I said it'll be fine on either.

The Best of Mercedes & AMG
W202 AMGs in SoCal we should have a meet up!
WE could all meet for coffee. I'll drive almost anywhere to see other C43s.

When I change oil in my M113 engines, I park the car on flat level ground on my driveway with the front wheels on the very edge, so I don't have to lift it up. Being level as it drains helps ensure all the old dirty oil gets out. I'll place my tub and pop off the drain plug. Then, I'll loosen the oil filter cover and lift it up just enough to let some air flow through, which will make the oil drain much faster and will eliminate much of the messy dripping from the old oil filter before I remove it. I also pour all my new oil in through the filter housing before I place my new filter, because I'm less likely to spill it there.
Just my 2 cents!

So I'm doing an oil change this weekend and I bought 3 cases of 6 of Mobil 1 Formula M 5W-40 and was thinking about it a lot whether I should use this oil or stick to the 0W-40 Mobil 1. So I asked a lot of MB Master Techs that OWN AMG M113 engines / M111 Engines / M104 Engines from mid 90s to early 2000s and they pretty summed it up for me like this. "0W-40 is used for engines that have less that 100,000 Miles on them and have been taken care of. So when you pass the 100,000 Miles on your AMG M113 Engine (and others aswell) you can start using the MB Approved 229.5 Specified Oil Formula M 5W-40 that can handle and help maintain and keep engine components last longer and have less wear in the heads and engine overall where the oil circulates in the block". So Having talked to many guys who actually owned these cars with these engines and having them say very accurately similar answers, I have decided to switch my oils to Mobil 1 Formula M 5W-40 for my C43 AMG with 147,000 miles. And the reason I say this is because fortunately for me and others that live here in SoCal, out temps never go to freezing point (I guess yet, you never know) and I do need something to keep the engine running for the longest it can. So anyways just wanted to share and hear some comments and critisism (negative or positive) is always a good thing. Every one is entitled to their own opinion to maintain their car as they please with out any hesitation.

My M113 has over 250000km (around 155k miles) and when my stock of 0w-40 is used up, I'll definitely order the 5w-40 Mobil1 for future oil changes. Recalling my recent visit at Affalterbach, the techs there said that the M113 was bullet proof and would last forever. They strongly recommend to change the oil and filter at half the mileage of the usual factory recommended distance.

Just came back from my mechanic oil/filter change done! and a bunch of other stuff!
