Can I replace the lower control arm bushings without special tools?

To remove them really the only special tool you need is a plate style spring compressor. To remove the bushing, you can use a drill bit to drill through the rubber to weaken it enough to knock the center of it out. Then you can use a hack saw and carefully cut 90% through the outer metal sleeve of the bushing then pry/knock/split it the rest of the way and out with a chisel or beefy flat blade screw driver. To re-install they need to be pressed back in but note that there is a orientation to the bolt hole for the bushing. It's off set for camber. Pay attention to that. I forget now which way it goes since it's been a few years. but note it before you tear your old ones apart.

if you have a large assortment of steel cylinders and sleeves, sure. but you need just the right sizes.

If I removed the complete control arm, I was thinking I could press it in with a vise?

you will want to remove the control arm no matter what. after you take the bushing bolts out, it's only the balljoint holding it in anyway so you might as well.

you will really need the right size cups. they don't come out easy and if your cup or sleeve is not quite right it will just **** in there and make a big mess. you don't want to press on the inner part of the bushing that is aluminum. you need to press on the outer metal shell that is very thin, and then support on the back side with a cup or sleeve.

a balljoint press tool would be your best bet over a vice, but you'll probably still need some steel stock around. the mb tool isn't the greatest for this. i use part of it, and also part of a balljoint press and it's attatchments.

+1 spot on advice. I used a large arbor press to push mine in and the crush was pretty substantial. I wouldn't attempt it with out a press and proper dies.
